How do I pursue long term goals?

I experience severe foreshortened-future symptoms, and I haven't figured out how to manage them. I'm scared every day. I don't know if the future is guaranteed, and I struggle to pursue long-term goals while simultaneously thinking, “What's the point? My world could burn down any day now.”

I want so many things for myself, but I'm just scared. I'm so scared. What's the point of building something if it won't matter in the long term because it will eventually be over?

I have so much evidence that the future is safe enough, you know? But somehow, that evidence never feels like enough. It's just hard.

Thanks.

Jennifer Lawrence should be cast in the next Nolan movie.

I am not representing Jennifer Lawrence in ANY way. I am simply a fan who saw an interview with her and Robert Pattinson in which she stated that Christopher Nolan is a director she deeply wants to work with. Lawrence wanted Pattinson to tell Nolan “Hi,” but in case he didn’t, I am here to relay the message.

I am going to separate this argument into two contentions. My first is Cameron and Spielberg and becoming the highest-grossing director in history; my second is Lawrence's acting range and experience so far.

Nolan is on track to becoming one of the highest-grossing directors in history, right behind Spielberg and Cameron. According to YouGov, Lawrence’s popularity is still astounding, with 93% in the “Fame” category. YouGov defines Fame as the percentage of people who have heard of a given topic. She also has a 7% “Disliked” rating on YouGov and is ranked number 11 for popularity and related measures, while Anne Hathaway is ranked number 12. I think this is important because Lawrence has more Oscar nominations than Hathaway while demonstrating a similar range, which I will discuss soon, and they both have one Oscar.

Lawrence is still a household name globally, and I believe that combining Nolan’s storytelling methods and technical filmmaking with Lawrence’s innate ability to draw an audience could help Nolan become the highest-grossing director in history. I believe that a movie starring Jennifer Lawrence would bring in many viewers because of both her popularity and her acting range.

She has exhibited great range, similar to Cillian Murphy, in the different roles she has taken on. Silver Linings Playbook, the movie for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress, is an excellent example of how she brings both deep emotional and comedic aspects to a character. Over the years, she has also appeared in movies such as Mother! and Joy, for which she was nominated for an Oscar.

Lawrence’s performance in Joy mirrors Nolan’s protagonists by trading triumph for weary isolation after a consuming, backstabbing struggle for ambition. Her rare ability to anchor complex, mature characters at a young age mirrors the exact qualities Christopher Nolan famously seeks in his actors. Lawrence is exceptionally good at providing perspective for the characters she plays, which is important for Nolan. She makes them more human and easier to root for.

Jennifer Lawrence is the best choice to star in either a lead or supporting role in Nolan’s next film because of the maturity and emotional range she can provide to a character. I personally find Nolan’s movies to be slightly long for my taste; however, if Jennifer Lawrence is a supporting or lead actress in one of his films, I—and many other people globally—will sit through a four-hour film, potentially helping him become the highest-grossing director in history.

First-gen college grad stuck after years of useless LinkedIn networking—how did you land your first corporate/analytics role?

Hey everyone,

I’m a first-generation college graduate struggling to break into a real career. I have no family roadmap in corporate, and to be honest, traditional networking has been a total wall. I’ve tried LinkedIn for years, attended school career events, reached out cold—and it’s gotten me absolutely nowhere.

My ultimate target is the actuarial field (currently studying for Exam P), but I desperately need steady income right now. I’m trying to land an entry-level role in Data Analytics, Business Analytics, or really any stable corporate position.

For fellow first-gen grads who were stuck in this same spot:

  • How did you break through when standard networking failed?
  • What specific entry-level or interim jobs paid the bills while you built skills?
  • What actual resume tweaks, portfolio projects, or non-traditional strategies got you past the screen?

Any real-talk advice or personal stories would mean the world right now. Thanks!

Vanderbilt 2025 Grad Seeking Entry-Level Data / Business Analytics Roles (NYC, Chicago, Boston)

Hello everyone, I recently graduated from Vanderbilt in May 2025 with a 3.34 GPA in Engineering Science and Math and am actively seeking entry-level data and business analytics roles in New York, Chicago, or Boston.

I have experience as a data analyst intern at a nonprofit, as well as several years of leadership experience at Taco Bell, where I developed strong operations and team management skills.

I’m currently focused on breaking into the data/analytics field and would really appreciate any advice, referrals, or leads.

Should I just pack a suitcase and move to Chicago right now?

I’m from Alabama and I need a change yesterday. Any thoughts?

Update: I have decided not to pack a suitcase and move to Chicago; however, I’m coming to visit July 6th and 7th!! To the person who recommended hostels—thank you!!

Guys, I’m a first-generation college graduate and part of the LGBTQ community, and I need to get out of Birmingham!! What should I do once I get to Chicago to find a data job? Should I just run up to Bain or Cornerstone Research’s office and hand them my resume like I’m insane, or…?

Vanderbilt Grad Seeking Chicago Roommate (July/August Move-In)?

Hi everyone!

I'm a 28-year-old male looking to move to Chicago in July or August and am searching for a roommate or room to rent for a one-year lease.

I graduated from Vanderbilt University in May 2025 with a background in engineering science and mathematics. I'm currently working while transitioning into a data analytics career, so I'll be looking for both local work and professional opportunities once I'm in the city.

A little about me:

  • LGBTQIA+ community member 🏳️‍🌈
  • Clean, responsible, and respectful
  • Looking for a friendly, low-drama living environment
  • Hoping to make Chicago my home and build a community there

I'm especially interested in neighborhoods like Lakeview, Northalsted/Boystown, Andersonville, Uptown, and nearby areas, but I'm open to other neighborhoods that are LGBTQ+-friendly, walkable, and have good access to public transit. My budget is around $800–$1,200 per month, depending on the location and setup.

If you're looking for a roommate, know of an available room, or have any recommendations, feel free to reach out. I'd love to connect!

Thanks!

Skill/Project building recommendations

Hi everyone,

I’m a recent Vanderbilt graduate with a degree in Engineering Science and Applied Mathematics, and I’m trying to break into data analytics.

So far, I’ve built skills in SQL, Python, Tableau, Excel, and statistics. I also completed an analytics project using SQL, Tableau, and NYSERDA household-level data.

My question is: what skills are most in demand right now for entry-level data analysts?

I’m particularly interested in topics like statistical learning, Markov chains, and Monte Carlo simulations, but I’m not sure whether those are actually valuable in industry or if they’re more niche.
If you were in my position, what would you focus on learning next? What skills or projects tend to make a candidate stand out?

Thanks everyone.
