Is there a way to tell if this is hard or soft maple just from the wood and bark?

Chopped it down in late winter so I didn’t get a look at leaves.

It cut similar to red oak and is slightly lighter. Tough to split. And I’m pretty decent at splitting wood.

Located in central MA.
