Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness

This one has been flying under my radar somehow. Had HBO on in the background and caught about 10 minutes of the Susan B. Anthony episode. Seemed absolutely hilarious.

I'll be watching this very soon. Just wondering if anyone has thoughts about it.

7 episodes, 30 minutes each, 1st Season

Just finished the show. (LOVED it by the way) question about Beth, Lynelle & Summer

Why did Beth have such a problem with Summer but seemingly no problem whatsoever with Lynelle? (as far as people having relationships with her daddy)

Stand By Me

Apparently today is the 40 anniversary so I decided to give it a first time watch.

At 1 hour and 29 minutes, I'm now left wondering if pound for pound this just might be the greatest movie of all-time.

I was trying to think of others under 90 minutes that might qualify. I immediately thought of The Princess Bride but that wouldn't qualify at 1hr 38min.
Airplane! might be a nice choice at 88 minutes.

Anywho, exceptional movie. Soundtrack, cinematography, acting, story, just all of it. I also got quite a kick out of the dog in the junkyard.

Mr. Show with Bob and David

So I've been on a first time watch of OZ for the last week. Obviously it's a pretty heavy (yet awesome) watch. I generally prefer to watch lighter stuff late at night as it gets closer to bedtime but I've blown thru most of the movies in my queue.

So I went searching and stumbled across the Mr. Show. It is HILARIOUS!! I never ever see this show recommended. Does it drop off or something?

OZ

Just started this one yesterday. It must pretty much be the very first heavy hitter on HBO as I noticed the date on the first episode was 1997. I've seen about 60 HBO series and I believe this is the very first one that has a pre-2000 date.

Anywho, really enjoying it so far.

Guard: You killed your parents and ate them, right?
Donald Groves: I only ate my mom. I was saving my dad for Thanksgiving.
Guard: That's festive

House of the Dragon Season 3 final tonight!!

I AM PUMPED

I do have a question though. I'll probably be too enthralled to post anywhere on social media but just in case...
I have linear commercial free HBO thru Spectrum. Will the show be over for me before it is for folks with commercials?

I just want to make sure I don't spoil anything.

High Maintenance

Just finished the series. What a treat. Easily the most unique slice of life show I've ever seen. I'd love to smoke one with Ben.

(I'm still chuckling at the scene where the vet presents The Guy with a drawing of FOMO)

His Dark Materials

I still feel like this is the most underrated masterpiece of all-time.

Best series final

So I just wrapped up Six Feet Under and finally saw the lauded series final. That last 5-10 minutes lived up to the hype. (What I thought of the rest of the show is a whole 'nother matter)

It got me thinking of series' finals. I think this would be my Top 10, more or less in order:

  1. The Deuce - somewhat similar to Six Feet Under
  2. His Dark Materials - the most emotional ending I've ever seen on HBO
  3. The Leftovers - the entire last episode really
  4. Six Feet Under - Loved it
  5. Sharp Objects - don't skip the credits!
  6. The Sopranos - Jumped out of my chair to check my cable connection
  7. Somebody Somewhere - Joyful
  8. The Penguin - Didn't see the ending twist coming whatsoever
  9. Succession - tension personified
  10. Boardwalk Empire - Perfect ending

The Pacific

I don't know if it was "Band of Brothers good" but it was still pretty darn good in it's own right. I still have tears streaming down my face even as I type this.

One thing I just learned minutes ago is that not only did Joseph Mazzello play Eugene Sledge, he also played Tim Murphy in Jurassic Park. (RIP Sam Neill)

Special shout to Jon Seda who not only starred in this but was also putting in the work at the time on that wonderful Treme show.

Six Feet Under

Early thoughts: (I'm on S2 Ep4)

- I had no idea funeral homes do reconstruction. I guess I just figured those cases would result in a closed casket or cremation.
- This might be kind of morbid, not really I suppose but I think when my time comes, this show will have somehow made it a little easier

Early thoughts continued...

- It's such an interesting mix of intense heartbreak, raunch, hilarity, seriousness, absurdity, feel good and feel bad.
- David is so, um, available
- Nate seems like the most "normal" one. Or Keith the cop
- Ruth Fisher is my favorite
- Brenda would be A LOT as a girlfriend

- I can't stand Gabe or Billy
- The Russian guy is really growing on me. (Both of them really)
- Richard Jenkins has it made. Pop in here and there (I always love his scenes)
- School counselor guy seems pretty cool
- I like Federico but beyond bummed he's so opposed to David's lifestyle
- Claire is really complicated

Marlo sighting in Treme? (S1 E5)

Can anyone confirm if it is in fact Jamie Hector that punched Davis in the bar towards the end of episode 5 of Treme?

He's not listed as ever being in Treme but I'm 99% convinced it's him.

The Newsroom

I've rarely, if ever, seen this show recommended. So I was a bit hesitant to give it a shot. Luckily, I've now watched about 70% of all HBO series. Options were getting thinner. I should've watched this a long time ago.

I was immediately hooked as the first episode was one of the best pilots I've ever seen. Having now finished the show, I can say the same about the series final as well.

A lot of the sharp, witty, hilarious dialogue reminded me quite a bit of other shows I've enjoyed like VEEP & Silicon Valley. It's not all about comedy though as it touches on several meaningful issues. It was quite prophetic in regard to the news, social media, morals, ethics, politics and life in general.

Somewhat oddly, Season 2 reminded me of True Detective Season 1. Just mostly the format with the interviews and then the stories that led to those interviews.

I enjoyed the entire cast. Pretty sure my favorite was Sloan Sabbith (Olivia Munn)

Whenever I see "What are some of the most underrated HBO shows?" from now on, The Newsroom will be included in my response.

Stay tuned after the show for a look inside the episode

Just trying to gauge how potentially crazy I am.

So there's a single note that plays right as that graphic appears on the screen. I just need to know if I'm the only person that starts singing John Parr's St. Elmo's Fire in their head.

Finally watching Treme. (Thru Season 1)

Honestly surprised it took me this long. I'm a huge fan of David Simon as both The Wire & The Deuce are in my personal Top 10. Have also seen We Own This City. All of them excellent.

There's lots and lots and LOTS of music in this. I've never really been exposed all that much to these genres. I must say I'm enjoying the heck out of it. Horns, violins, piano, funk, Cajun and much more.

Lots of food as well. Beignets are HUGE down there.

I will say there's an inordinate amount of funerals. I found it interesting how the sorrow is usually met by the second line and turned into an earnest celebration of life. (you'll learn all about the second line in this)

Pretty much equal parts of hope, despair, joy and sadness throughout.

Lots of crossovers from The Wire: Bunk, Lester, Slim Charles and others.
John Goodman. You got Joanie Stubbs from Deadwood.
Steve Zahn & Khandi Alexander play huge roles in Season 1.
Lots of cameos: Elvis Costello, Steve Earle, countless area legends.
David Morse is even in it. There's just too many folks to list.

Can't wait to see what's next in Season 2!

I'm not a baseball historian so I have to ask, are big moves at the deadline generally successful or failures?

Just wondering if it's generally worth it.

Rain Dogs is the worst series I've ever watched.

I have no further comment. I'm just trying to forget this ever happened.
