possibly chinese elm?

landscaper at my work parking lot pulled this small guy out of the ground next to a bigger Bush of the same, it still had quite a few feeders attached to the roots and they allowed me to take it since they were going to trash it anyway. is this a Chinese elm or some other elm? just a look-alike? either way I think it looks awesome and I want to make a bonsai from it if I can get it to root and establish but I just want to get a solid ID on what it is if anybody knows... thank you so much!

Chaste Tree Styling Advice?

i first became obsessed with chaste tree when seeing multiple used in landscaping and marveling at their gnarled twisted trunks and purple flower shoots, i remember thinking that they looked like massive bonsai or niwaki. they immediately made my wishlist, so when I saw this for the first time at my local nursery ( the only one of its kind there) I could not stop myself from buying it! the foliage looks a little bit rough but most of the new growth looks healthy and green, but overall I think it looks amazing and has a lot of potential! I just don't know exactly what to do with it I will probably let it recover for a while and try to get the foliage looking healthier, but after that any styling advice would be greatly appreciated! I'm just having so much fun with this hobby and my collection is expanding faster than I ever thought! Bonsai has been the most fun I've had in a long time and I'm super excited to transform this specimen over time into something amazing! anybody who has advice on styling or care tips or anything to add would be welcome and thank you in advance!

Possible Jade Candidate

The Gardener at my property somehow or another broke this Branch off of one of our large Jade bushes and left it laying there in the dirt I was about to throw it away since it looked a little ragged but I decided to throw it into some chunky soil and perlite instead, do you think that this will recover or come back? And if it does does it have potential as bonsai material? I kind of like the shape of it hence why I decided to keep it in the first place but I have not done a Jade Bonsai and I'm not really sure what good starting material looks like in this case. any tips or advice or definitely appreciated thank you!

mystery volunteer?

this little guy popped up in my side garden amongst various expected volunteers but I have never seen one like this pop up before looks to be in the legume family of some sort is it still far too early to know what it is if so at what point would identification be possible for a baby like this?

Edited to add: southern California

my Hibiscus bonsai experiment

got this little guy at the nursery a while back, it was just basically a cut stem with very little foliage and ive been training it as a bonsai and it is responding beautifully! the foliage is coming in dense and small and the color is more beautiful and unique every new day. I just wanted to share my little experiment with all you folks!!!

The nursery tag said mahogany Splendor, not 100% sure if thats accurate but im fairly sure its some sort of cranberry hibiscus based on everything ive seen🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

hope other people appreciate her as i do♥️

Some kind of hibiscus?

Sold to me as Mahogany Splendor Hibiscus. Plant ID apps disagree. Is this variegation or just unusual pigmentation? Can anyone identify it? Is it even a hibiscus?! I'm pretty sure it is but I do not know what kind unless it is some random mutation... Any help would be appreciated!

first time juniper 🤍

this is my first time working with a juniper and I am fairly new to the hobby in general did I overwork it? turn it back too much? not enough? does anyone have any tips or advice going forward I'm going to wait a while before doing any more work on it but I'm not too emotionally attached and it was pretty cheap just a starter juniper to mess around with the species but I would still appreciate any advice tips help criticism etc.. thank you in advance!

Crape Myrtle? Bonsai Potential?

got this chunk of root it is pushing off smaller roots, And sprouting new growth from the other side, growth that im fairly sure is crape myrtle, as the chunk of root was dug out right under a crepe myrtle tree and cut from what I believe to be its root system. for now I just threw it in a small pot before I can take it home tomorrow and plant it in something bigger but for one is this for sure crape Myrtle? And does it have any potential as a bonsai? It sprouts new growth at a pretty fast rate underground it would grow new shoots every couple weeks after they were pulled so I finally dug it up and broke off the root itself 😂 I think it could be pretty interesting not sure how it all works but it should be genetically adult and might make an interesting Bonsai choice although I might just be crazy in a pipe dream 😭😂

Good Deal On Bottle Brush Bonsai?

I received this Bonsai from my friend and co-worker and was told I was being given a good deal or good friend discount, as far as I know this is a bottle brush Little John variety and was sold to me for $35. I LOVE IT. I know that it is not super professional or ultra high quality but I am very happy with it as a starter Bonsai but my question is did I actually get a good deal? is this worth more than the 35 I paid? if so how much would this sell for realistically he told me normally it would be around 60 but I'm not sure as I am fairly ignorant to this he also gave me some fertilizer that's supposed to help with flower production as well as a nice looking care card to show me how to water fertilize and what kind of lighting it needs I love the shape and I'm looking forward to styling it and caring for it in the years to come but yeah basically did I really get a good deal? how much would it be worth? do you all like it as much as I do? thank you for any help and advice in advance!

Cheapo display pieces, any good or trash?

picked these up fairly cheap (~30 for both)

i like them both very much but know they aren't super impressive or professional, i love the moss and greenery in the black pot especially 🪴 I'm still new to the hobby but im very much enjoying my time so far ive picked up a bunch of cool stuff :D

anywayysss my questions are mostly:

are they worth the price?

are they any good?

do i need to do anything urgently?

or are they just cheap garbage?

either way i like them and intend to keep them, so care advice is appreciated even if you hate them hheheh, just wanna know peoples opinions, especially you bonsai peeps :D

they were labeled as Green Cloud Sage and Mahogany Splendor Hibiscus respectively btw

thankss ! くコ:彡くコ:彡くコ:彡

I have been training this mandevilla after bringing it back from near death and it has quickly become one of my favorite plants of many! this morning when I went out to water I noticed a tiny baby pine tree has decided to make my mandevilla's pot it's home I will let it establish for a couple months before transplanting it into its own pot but I am super excited And happily confused to see this new surprise buddy. also included are a few of my other plants because I have a problem and I hope other people appreciate the results of my addiction LOL

u/Squibdd — 2 months ago

picked this up today for 25 dollars, I figured the pot alone was probably worth a good amount so I picked it up and it kind of spoke to me I like how it looks although I am very new to the hobby and don't know too much I do not know what species it is so that could be helpful if anyone knows, but above all I just want to know did I make a good deal? is it looking healthy? is there anything I should do immediately or change? basically at the end of the day was this worth $25?

(also sorry I have bad lighting, too excited to find out more to wait till morning to take pictures LOL :D )

just picked up both of these plants yesterday and am very happy with them as starters and I'm very excited to work with them in the near future and going forward!

The first one is a bit less traditional but it is a mandevilla which I have already been having fun working and shaping this species previously but this specimen is gorgeous and the thickness and trunk shape along with the roots already scream bonsai to me!

The second one is a bougainvillea I actually got it on clearance for $9 and I am very impressed with the trunk shape and thickness already it was by far the best looking one I found and I have big plans for it!

I just wanted to share these two magnificent finds with the people of this community and I am definitely open to any chips or inquiries! the last two images are just AI but I used it to help me decide what color pots I would want these plants in so they are just copy pasted the plants as they are now into different pots and I am happy with the colors although I won't put them in Bonsai pots for a while.

I hope everybody else finds these plants as beautiful as I do I am excited to work on these for years to come!
