Are wire brushes actually dangerous?

Most of us have probably heard the dangers of wire bristles (getting stuck in your food) by now. But has anyone actually had any first-hand experiences of this happening? It seems like an old wives tale to me. Personally, I’ve used them for years with no issue. Sometimes I’ll use some foil or a different type of brush (on right in pic) but they just don’t work like the classic wire brush.
