LIAM SHARP'S 'CONAN' portfolio - US edition

Liam Sharp's Kickstarter campaign for his Conan portfolio just went live. I know a lot of members in this subreddit have expressed admiration for his Conan art, so you may be interested in this too. Personally, (along with Rob De La Torre) Liam is my favorite modern Conan artist and I am thrilled for the chance to obtain a portfolio with some of his amazing Conan drawings...

FROM THE KICKSTARTER: "In April this year, Liam Sharp was invited to create a unique exclusive portfolio for the Lake Como Comic Art Festival. The result was this already-iconic set of Conan prints, the originals of which were featured in a hugely popular exhibition at the show.

The pieces were representations of classic scenes from Robert E.Howard's Conan the Barbarian stories - a character Liam has adored since he was a young boy - and are as close to canon as the artist could get them based on the texts..."

Conan The Barbarian #1 & #2 added to my collection this week

I was excited to pick up these copies of Conan The Barbarian #1 & #2 from my LCS this week. Very happy to have them in my collection, even if a bit unexpected. Any Conan comics from 1970s Marvel that I've collected previously have mostly been REH adaptations and I hadn't been considering these issues, but when my local comic shop obtained a vintage Conan collection (among other titles) and these were suddenly available, I jumped at the opportunity.

It was interesting to read these early issues, before the tone and look of the series had been established. Barry Windsor-Smith's art is still being refined and seems to be influenced by Kirby (although perhaps some of that can be attributed the inker?) rather than the BWS aesthetic that later became so identifiable. However, you can see it begin to evolve, even by issue #2. And although these stories don't have the same raw energy as Howard's (or Roy Thomas's eventual REH adaptations), they have enough of the essential elements of Conan and the Hyborian world to be an enjoyable read as well as a solid foundation to build the series on.

Issue #2 also has some cool letter page inclusions giving feedback on issue #1 (notably from Harlan Ellison & Glenn Lord).
