Roth Conversions

I’ve been modeling scenario after scenario on Boldin to find a Roth conversion strategy that makes sense. And it seems that no Roth conversions makes the most sense. Am I missing something?

My husband just turned 60 and retired. We have about $1.5 million in a tax-deferred 401k. We’ve been modeling three Roth conversions over the next three years and all but the $100 K per year causes a reduction in net worth at longevity. And the $100 K per year scenario only adds about $45 k in net worth and $200 K less in lifetime taxes.

Unless we are missing something it feels like we should just accept the higher IRMAA fees and taxes.

We have our ages at longevity set to 75 for him and 85 for me but even when we extended the ages it did not move the bar much.

REMS Scan Repeat

I just had my second REMS scan almost exactly one year after my first. I was anxious to see if there was any change because my repeat DEXA, done in March, was pretty identical to the previous year’s.

These were the changes on the REMS (performed at the same place, same equipment, different technician):

• Left femoral neck: +0.5%
• Right femoral neck: −2.0%
• Left total hip: −0.4%
• Right total hip: −2.7%
• Left trochanter: −4.2%
• Right trochanter: −6.7%
• Lumbar spine: +3.1%

I’m not sure what to think…

Where should I go for sunny skies and 60-70 degree weather in September?

We are looking for somewhere to go to escape the Texas heat next month. We love easy hikes, strolls around quaint towns, coffee shops, paved bike paths and bike rentals, but not too much driving. We’d love to stay in a cabin with a hot tub on a lake or river - but we’re open to other ideas!

We lived in the Puget Sound area and have traveled throughout Washington already. We’ve been to Lake Tahoe, the Northern California coast and wine region. We loved all of these areas but would like to explore somewhere different. We’re willing to travel internationally but we don’t love extremely long travel days.

Do you have the perfect vacation for us?

**Thanks for all the wonderful ideas! We appreciate all of them and can’t wait to start researching them!

I found these in my mother-in-law’s jewelry box. I’ve never seen anything like them. The dime and penny look like they are wrapped with gold wire but the other looks more like costume jewelry, I think.
