Can double shield (ZZ) ball bearings be used in place of single shield (Z) bearings?

I want to replace the bearings on an industrial drill press, and some of the bearings listed are the same size but half are single shield (6206Z) and half are double shield (6206ZZ)

Where I live in Canada it seems to be easier to find the double shield versions

Can I use the ZZ ones in place of Z, or are there instances where a single shield is preferred?

Old Chain lock how to use

Hoping this counts as a fastener,

Found these chain lock thingys in the garage and they might be perfect for something I’m trying to do IF I knew how they worked,

Do they simply hammer together and apart? They’re pretty stuck now so was thinking penetrating oil or a soak in something before hammering them apart, but after that do they just hammer together and remain strong enough to pull a fairly heavy weight? (Not a car or anything, just trying to remove a stubborn pulley with whatever I have on hand)

Lubing a restored vintage drill press

I’m tearing down, cleaning, repairing and restoring a vintage industrial drill press (1991, 20”, 1hp motor)

Took about a week (thanks to one particular pulley nut) but it’s finally completely dismantled. Before I fully clean it I’m wondering where it should be greased/lubed/oiled and with what types of grease/lube/oil

All manuals and info I can find about it or similar models sing the standard “it comes pre greased you’ll never have to regrease it” sort of tune but that doesn’t really account for such a major clean up.

Anyone have any advice / experience / knowledge they’re willing to share?

I’ve been taking pictures of the majorly greased areas but hard to tell what was supposed to be there or what was added or built up over 34 years

Direction to loosen this nut

GOT IT TY ALL

Sorry I know this is probably a dumb question but my brain is not working after spending so long trying to loosen this nut and just want to double check to confirm I’m going the right direction

Do I turn the nut the red or the blue direction?

Error code trouble shoot 2018 Kia forte

Car: 2018 Kia forte, 2.0L LX
Codes: cycles between p0017 and p0014

I’ve been trying to figure out why I’m getting these codes but can’t figure it out so far.

It’s definitely not: the PCV filter or manifold, the VVT solenoids or their contact points

My next guess would be an issue with serpentine belt assembly or timing chain issue BUT the belt and pulleys all looks fine and clean, and I don’t hear ANY sounds that would indicate an issue with either (just changed my oil and filter a couple weeks ago so visually inspecting the timing chain would be kind of a drag but again no sounds to indicate that’s the issue)

I was going to take the belt off to look at the pulleys more closely/see if they need to be cleaned past what I’ve been able to see with it on, but I can’t for the life of me push the tensioner pulley to get the belt off. At first I thought this meant it had to be the issue, but I’m also not super strong, and again no sounds or visual indications that that’s what’s gone wrong

Could the tensioner be seized/not working properly or could the timing chain be an issue EVEN if I have no other indication when driving it ? (No sounds at all)

What else should I check?

Sourcing Replacement parts Canada

Going through my late grandfathers workshop and found this really cool measuring tape with a calculator.

I love taking things apart, cleaning and fixing them, and this is a neat combo tool I’d use often that would make me think of him

The screen to display the numbers and the solar panel are both in rough shape, I’m wondering where I might find appropriate replacement pieces for this that are easily accessible to Canada

Any thoughts or advice would be super appreciated!!

Cleaning braided ground strap- Q about tags/tape

Edit to add: also seems to be the same tape wrapped around under the tag, should I put that back on as well even if I don’t put the tag back on?

I’m about to clean the braided ground strap on my car and was wondering about the tag and possibly also the tape

To clean the most corrosion possible I’d ideally like to remove the tag and tape and put fresh tape on after -

is it ok to remove the tag and not have it back on? (Don’t care about car warranty or anything like that)

And is the tape around both ends just regular electrical tape?

Thanks so much!

What to cover when Cleaning engine bay (Kia forte 2018)

I’m working on a couple things on the engine and have had to be super careful when disconnecting removing things that the caked on gunk on the engine doesn’t fall into exposed areas.

Before doing anything else i wanted to spray down / clean the engine bay but have never done that and have seen conflicting advice online regarding what to cover and how to spray it down

In the photo I circled in red the area that’s super caked up, and in blue the areas I’m assuming I should cover

Any advice before I proceed?

Thanks so much!

Ordering Car Parts from Canada

Edit to add: anyone have experience ordering from partsavatar?

Hey everyone,

It’s been a few years since I’ve done my own car work but have to fix some things this summer and was wondering if ordering from Rock auto is still the way to go, or if recent changes to duties have shifted the Canadian market elsewhere?

Thanks a ton!

What are these and how do I understand their stamps?

EDIT TO ADD: Thanks for all the comments! Organizing and inventorying everything tonight and tomorrow, and when that’s done I’ll likely comment here or post about it, and message anyone who asked to. Feel free to send me a message request if you’re interested in knowing when I post them, and I’ll open my messages when I’m done sorting. although i live in Canada I’m more than willing to ship some if anyone’s interested :)

Cleaning out my grandfathers workshop and selling things i won’t personally use.. he has about 10 billion of these things in various states, but when I try to look them up they are so expensive- why on earth?

Basically wondering what they are, and how I can understand what’s stamped on them so I can better judge what the unused/good condition ones are worth

Also have a bunch of hexagon shaped things with clover looking holes in the middle that seem to be paired with them

King KC-30P drill press resources?

Note: already contacted manufacturer!

Cleaning up and restoring this vintage 20” drill press, and was wondering if anyone on the planet had access to any resources/manuals for it?

I already reached out to the manufacturer, unfortunately they don’t have due to its age (manufactured in 91)

Mapp has torch pieces

Hey everyone

I’m going through my late grandfathers work shop and he was a welder and has a LOT of mapp gas things. I’ve always used butane torches, but if I were to keep some things are there any types of attachments or tips in particular I should keep my eye out for that are good for jewelry making?

For reference I do some soldering, but mostly enamelling, and I melt down my scrap silver to make pieces with and use metal clay
