poopy shed 🥲

poopy shed 🥲

i waited a whole 14 days for my little guy to shed, so excited to have two sheds from him to compare, and he decided to do the biggest poop right in the middle of it 😢😢 he knows what he has done.

bioactive with a burrowing snake?

Hi all, I currently have a juvenile cali kingsnake who I’d love to give a great bioactive enclosure to when he’s ready for his big enclosure (would be my first bioactive) however he absolutely loves to burrow, does anyone have any tips or advice on if this is possible and if so what would be the best plants etc for it?
i know that they have lower humidity needs so i wouldn’t be able to use anything too tropical that’s for sure

Pet vine

sometimes i’ll be staring at my cali kings viv for ages trying to spot him, and then think, wait, that’s a strange looking vine

springtails or mites?

i’m sorry for the crappy video, when i opened my BPs viv there was a ton of these tiny white things running on top of the hide, they moved quickly so could only get one on vid, could they just be springtails?

I don’t have a bio active vivarium and the substrate is coco fibre and coco chunks, the ones that come dry and sealed in blocks, and it wasn’t just added in either, it’s been in there for just over a month now (spot cleaned and re-moistened) any help would be really appreciated

Feeding size?

I’ve had my little man for almost a month and a half now, he’s just turned a year old and his breeder had him on fuzzys once a week so this is the feeding schedule i’ve kept, do you guys think that’s okay? i’m not sure if he should be on something bigger for his age but his head is so tiny i don’t know if he could physically eat a hopper yet, im still getting him used to handling so i’ve not been able to weigh him properly, i tried (roughly) and it said 180g which i do not think is right so i can’t really use any feeding charts yet. just wanted some outside opinions 😅

handling

finally got a hold of my 1 year old for the first time 🫠 he’s not happy with me at all that’s for sure, he musked on me instantly, expected, then he was alright for a bit, chilling out, about 5 mins in he decided he actually wanted to strike continuously, little guy was aiming for my face and everything, i wanted to keep ahold of him until he chilled out again but it wasn’t happening, so put him back to have his little tantrum by himself. This is gonna be a long process 🥲🥲

1 year old getting used to me

I can’t wait till I can finally handle this little guy 😩 got him about a month ago and we’re currently at the stage of just having stare offs with the viv doors open (i don’t actually stare at him)

Juvenile kingsnake behaviour?

Hi! So 3 and a half weeks ago now i got my first 1 year old cali king (not my first snake, but first kingsnake) and he was completely fine the first 2 weeks, exploring, took 2 meals successfully, i hadn’t started handling him yet as was waiting for him to take 2 meals first, but after the second meal, so 8 days ago now, i’ve not seen him at all, there’s been nights i’ve stayed up super late and no sign either.

I know for sure he hasn’t escaped, as he pooped in his water bowl (thanks) a couple days after eating, and about 4 days ago i did have a poke around in the substrate and hes just buried really deeply at the back of the viv.

So, I’m assuming he’s in shed, i didn’t actually see his face when i poked around so cant confirm that he was in blue or anything. But he was meant to eat yesterday, left a fuzzy in his viv overnight and he hadn’t taken it by the morning so i had to dispose of it.

Since it’s been 8 days now, when can i expect to see him again? as he’s only 1 i dont want him skipping too many meals and i dont want to dig him up to show him the food as i’ve not handled him yet so know that would probably do more harm than good

right time to dig for kingsnake?

I’ve not seen my just turned 1 year old cali king for 3/4 days now, he ate on sunday, and i found poop in his water bowl 2 days ago, however i’ve not seen any other sign of him at all, it’s really hot right now so i’m well aware he’s possibly just camping out in his substrate but of course the stress of him escaping is always there, i’m pretty sure i’ve escaped proof his viv, he’s meant to eat again in a couple days but if he still hasn’t come out he won’t find it, he’s lacking braincells in that department.

Should I bother digging through his substrate, stressing him out (as he’s still fairly new to me, haven’t even started handling him yet) to make sure he’s still in there and doing okay, or give it a few more days?

Any help appreciated, I know these posts can be kind of annoying, sorry 😬

leaving a fuzzy out

how long is okay to leave a fuzzy out for a juvenile cali king? this is his 2nd feed with me, he’s burrowed somewhere so i couldn’t hand it to him with the tongs so i’ve left it in his viv, been there for about an hour and a half now and he’s still not taken it and i can’t see him, when should i take this out?

i’m assuming i shouldn’t go digging trying to find him to show him it’s there?

broken UVB?

i recently bought an arcadia t5 pro uvb for my snake, it seemed alright for the first hour and then started really obviously flickering, it did it again when i tried to tighten things etc and turned it back on, but after about 5 mins, i’ve obviously just kept it off now as its faulty but has anyone else had this experience, do you think it’s a problem with the whole kit or could i just replace the bulb?

Tips for getting a juvenile used to you

So i got my 1 year old cali king a week ago today, he has successfully taken a fuzzy from me off the tongs, was very proud of him, im going to give him one more feed before i attempt to start handling him (this will make it 2 weeks since i got him) he hasn’t been handled much from the breeder, however he’s settled in absolutely amazingly and has been doing so great, the breeder said he never really took his food from tongs either, but he did immediately from me with no problems whatsoever, and settled into his new home pretty much instantly.

Anyway, i want the process of getting him used to me as good as i can possibly make it, I’ve been sitting in front of his enclosure once a day (as seen in the pic above, he thinks i can’t see him) and he always comes to just watch me, but does anyone else have any tips on anything else i could be doing, or even tips on how to start the handling process?

Juvenile feeding - aspen

I got my juvenile (11 months) cali king 4 days ago, today was his first feed with me and he did amazingly, took it straight from the tongs, however he did drag it through the aspen, it was a dry fuzzy but I’m worried that he may swallow some aspen? is this something to be concerned about?

My BP is on coco soil which is why i’m unsure and i plan to upgrade this little guy to soil x playsand once he’s done quarantining, just looking for some advice/reassurance

tips on keeping snakes cool?

I live in the UK and we’ve had a mini heatwave these past couple of days, i live in an apartment, most homes don’t have AC here and i’m worried about the heat with my snakes (2 BPs, 1 hognose), today i just turned their heat off all together as it was 32°c outside, which is perfect for the warm side but the cool side is also around 29°c due to the external temps, and I have to turn their heat back on during the night as it drops to 18°c.

Does this seem to be okay or is there anything else I could be doing to help try and maintain the correct temps? I’m worried about them overheating

Cali Kingsnake breeders in the uk?

Hi! not sure if anyone will actually be able to help me here but does anyone know of any cali kingsnake breeders within the uk? I’ve looked on morph market and even there for the UK it’s very limited with most of them already being 2+ years but i’d love to be able to work with one from a juvenile, any help would be appreciated 😊

Advice on enquiring about the new pets act

We’ve been renting a flat for about 4 months now, when we signed the contract it did have a no pets policy, however about a month in we asked if we were allowed to keep a snake and this did get allowed, we paid £50 and signed the change, however it specifically stated “the tenants are allowed ONE snake”, this was before the new act came into place.

We have another small snake that we just move to a different house during inspections that are done through an agency, however we would love to get a couple more snakes and want to do it the official way so that there’s no worry about relocating them during inspections, any advice on the best way to ask this ?

I’m thinking surely if one is allowed then I don’t see what the issue with a couple more would be but I’d rather not have the specific limit altogether, they’re kept in one room and it all looks very neat and tidy, non venomous and not huge, obviously they don’t free roam and are in the appropriate enclosures, so with all of this taken into account with the new act i’m betting on my chances of it being accepted are fairly strong?

any advice appreciated!

substrate choice

I’m hoping to get my first cali kingsnake soon, does anyone know if either of these are good substrate options for it (i’m from the UK) ? I’ve always used coco soil/husk for my BPs but i’ve read that that can be too humid for a king, any opinions or better alternatives that would be available in the uk are very appreciated

EDIT: i wasn’t planning on doing a bio-active setup if that changes anything
