Can we be dead ass. THIS is where they're cutting corners of all places?

So im working through my blood angels upgrade sprue and noticed some pauldrons have the corners cut out. Does this mean anything at all?

Is there any difference on the tabletop between painting a captain red vs gold? Also what weapons should I be giving this guy. Thanks in advance
