FYI - Sherlock & Co. Has Started Running Ad Free On BBC Sounds.

Sherlock & Co. Is now on BBC Sounds. Not too much of a scoop but interesting nonetheless. If you are in the UK (or near a UK VPN or use get_iplayer...) and not a Patreon member, it is a nice little bonus.

I take it this run will be missing the Mailbag Patreon exclusives though. Seems like a good way for the creators to get a little extra funding as they close in on the final run of Sherlock books.

Carry on. 😀

It is curious as they have also signed the Noisier Hugh Bonneville Sherlock Readings Podcast too.

That's a lot of Sherlock Holmes.

Thanks for the Space 1999 Recommendation!

Just a quick thank you to the whole BF community for the recommendations from my post a little while ago. I was looking BF Audio Drama's that are not DW.

I've started Space 1999 and it was EXACTLY what I was looking for. Sci-fi with a little bit of an edge and a bite. Never saw the show, but this AD is a great listen. A little sad to hear it is only a few volumes long. The cover art work is rad (people still say that?).

I have Dorian Gray and Space Cops (happy to see that still seems to be ongoing) on deck for after this.

Thanks again, everybody!

Green Wing Series 2 Is Out - Because Audible Won't Tell You It Is

Just a reminder for the fans of the original series...

The entire original cast is back for a second series. As per normal, it was immediately buried in the Audible catalogue.

Not important for people that haven't seen Green Wing but super important for people that have. 😉

Intimacy - BBC Sounds - These Are Some Big Names!

A trailer has just dropped for a new Audio Drama called Intimacy. There is quite the cast!

Direct Download / RSS

It releases on the 22nd July 2026.

Blurb:

"Intimacy coordinator Liza Simmons is very good at her job. She is a safe space, a warrior for consent, the person actors rely on when scenes get complicated. Her personal life, however, is anything but safe.

A former actor and divorced single mum, Liza is drowning in debt to her ex-husband Michael and barely holding things together. So, when her agent offers her a job on a glossy, big-budget modern adaptation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, shooting on a Greek island, she has no choice but to say yes."

Liza - Lena Headey

Lou - Hannah Waddingham

Mum - Alison Steadman

Bunny - Maisie Williams

It seems to also be available as a world wide podcast release. So not just gated to people in the UK.

What Are The Killer BF Audio Drama's That Are Not Doctor Who

I love audio dramas but never really got into Doctor Who post 2005. Just doesn't float my boat. I respect it, but that's as far as I can go. I get that with no Who, Big Finish wouldn't be Big Finish.

I found Big Finish through 2000ad. I fell head over heels for the Radio 1 comic book adaptations and needed a fix for Dredd after the two seasons ended there.

The 2000ad series they ran for a couple of years was truly great (and was a little gutted when it ended...).

Since then I have dipped my toe back into more of their non-Who dramas. The Luther Arkwright adaptations were really cool, Pathfinder was a lot of fun. There are not many sword and sandles ADs out there.

I did like Shada but that was because it seems more like an unofficial Hitchhikers drama.

So my long winded question is:

What are the best non-Doctor Who audio dramas that Big Finish have done? What have I not seen (or heard) that I could try out?

---EDIT---

I was not expecting the level of responses for this! Thank you! I will dive into the comments later.

But for now, thank you for being so welcoming and not jumping on me for not liking DW. I was a little nervous about posting this question! 😅

Are The Reading Bin Colletors On Strike And We Haven't Been Told About It?

The General Waste and Recycling keeps getting rescheduled then rescheduled again and then never picked up.

Hope we're not being singled out. 😅 All the benefits of living in Birmingham but with the added bonus of the higher cost of living...

---EDIT---

Colletors = Collectors

I shouldn't type while getting dragged around by a dog...

---EDIT2---

I have often wondered, if I ran for local council with no other polices apart from looking at trash pick up times and saying "We will recycle glass", I would comfortably win...

---EDIT3---

One official course of action is for people to flytip their rubbish in publish areas.

If you then report it to here:

https://www.reading.gov.uk/waste-and-recycling/fly-tipping/

It gets logged by the council and they have to pick it up. Nobody would notice this as flytipping is already rife in Reading. It would still get picked up faster than bins in our roads.

Anyone Keeping Up With Milady? BBC Sounds

It's a re-writing / origin story of The Three Musketeers character.

TLDR description: What if Milady was a psychopathic French James Bond (so just James Bond)?

It is more a few specials rather than a series. Part 3 and 4 have just gone up.

It has a great modern feel featuring music cues and immersive sound design. Great to hear something that is not the standard horror or sci-fi (not that there is anything wrong with those!) for ADs.

Strong Recommend

Available free on BBC Sounds in the UK or... Wherever else you can find it.

Best Solution For Making Your Fave Wired Gaming Headphones Wireless

I have tried a lot of wireless gaming headsets. Turtle Beach, Astro, Steel Series... They have all gone off to eBay over the years. I have kept my wired headphones... but... I do like the options that wireless can give me.

My HD 598 (most comfortable), Polk Striker Pro (best microphone) and Truthear Hexa's (most convenient) cover all the different use cases I need for gaming. They also don't have any electronics to break in them unlike the gaming headsets I've used. I've had the headphones for over ten years. They still sound great.

The Avantree Prolink is the first thing since the original Astro Mixamp 5.8 (came out in 2011!) that lets me use the headphones I want wirelessly. I've been really impressed with it. The LE Audio is clean and the latency is as low as any dedicated gaming headset I have used, The music mode is 40ms and the gaming mode (if you want to use the microhone) is 20ms. The receiver can drive all of my cans at a decent volume and I cannot perceive a loss in detail.

There is likely a debate about the Prolink LC3 audio and lossless wireless audio... To me, it sounds every bit as good as any gaming headset I've used. Better even, as I get to use the headphones I actually like. I would like to see an update with the gaming centric Bluetooth LC3+, as that is the codec all the modern headsets like Turtle Beach, Maxwell, Steel Seires and Fractal are using now for their USB transmitters. Bet you didn't know your fancy 2.4ghz headphones use a bluetooth codec now to connect to the USB, eh? Because they do.

Not sure if it helps you, but maybe it does?

---EDIT---

Put in some links to the devices mentioned here for further reading.

My Research Into Making Wired Heaphones/IEMs Wireless

All the gaming headsets I have bought over the years have eventually failed due to technical failures or newer models coming out. I have concluded that the best headphones have already been made and I have my favorites. There is not much that can go wrong with headphones that only have a wire and a couple of speakers.

I do recognize that we live in the future and wireless is still convenient. I put in a lot of research into how to make my Truthesr Hexa's or HD 958's a little more mobile for gaming and movies.

Below is a copy and paste of a reply I made to someone asking a similar question here. Just making is a full post if anyone else finds it useful. If you have other suggestions for making headphones wireless please let me know:

  • There has not been a gaming wireless non-bluetooth transmitter / receiver since the Astro Mixamp 5.8. You could try eBay. But they are bulky and chew through AAA batteries.
  • I have found a good solution though. It is still Bluetooth BUUUUT it uses the LE Audio standard. So great quality and very, very low latency. Current Top Pick is The Avantree Prolink. Sounds great and let's me use my Hexa's, Etymotic or HD 958's. It just plugs in to USB and has gaming and music modes. It also allows for microphones. It's not the sexiest device but really does work.
  • For using a 3.5mm connection I am using this setup.
  • If you only use a controller for gaming on Windows 11, then and XBOX controller paired with the XBOX PC Wireless Adapter is suprisingly good. Just plug your IEMs into the bottom of the controller. The audio contection uses Wi-Fi Direct. Very low latency. The sound is crisp and the Microphone audio is REALLY good (depending on your mic obv.). The only, and major, downside being that you are having to carry round a controller. So if you are wanting the wireless audio for anything else it is not the most convenient.
  • If you want something cheap that just works with both 3.5mm and USB there is the 5.8G Wireless in Ear Monitor System. It cannot return a microphone though and has a noise floor to it. You can solve this by nudging down the Volume on the receiver and upping the volume on the device. The latency is so low on this using I can use to too monitor my XLR mic. It does take a little of the bass out of the audio.

Most new wireless gaming headphones (Steel Series, Maxwell, Fractal) are using Bluetooth LC3PLUS on their usb transmitters now anyway. The whole lossy vs. lossless for wireless audio isn't really worth having anymore.

Wish I'd Gone For The Standard Wheels. The Pro Wheels Have Been Trying T Kill Me...

I decided to treat myself by being up-sold on the Rollerblade Castors when I bought my new Secret Labs chair.

The first set of rollerblade wheels shed their ball bearings after 8-9 months. Secret Labs did send me replacement V2 Rollerblade Castors that seem to have a bigger housing for the ball bearings. So it appears that was a known issue.

But after a few months the new wheels started falling out of the wheel mounts when I sat on the chair. Tipping the whole thing over and launching me into my desk and the base gouging my flooring... Makes for fun work day...

So I am now talking again with Secret Labs customer service.

My advice is to stick with the standard wheels. I gave my wife my old chair and that has been rocking it without any issues. The Pro wheels have been making attempts on my life for the short 16 months period I have had the chair.

Save some money and time with customer service. A higher cost does not equal a better product (or support) at Secret Labs.

---EDIT---

Currently Secret Labs are offering me the replacement wheelbase for free but wanting to charge me for the replacement Rollerblade Casters.

I am now having to explain that they have to abide by UK law and the 2015 Consumer Rights act. Disappointing that they care very little about the saftey of their consumers and are just interested in nickle and diming on spare parts they don't build correctly in the first place. While also not caring about not following consumer rights.

Well, at least they get to charge £500 a chair.

---EDIT 2---

I replied that they have to pay for it all under UK consumer law. I now have had a reply to that saying that their product support need a few days to review the castors falling off.

Things seem to actually be going backwards in contacting customer service...
