Genndy Tartakovsky on how he got into Conan, Robert E. Howard, and how that directly inspired Primal
This interview is from ten months ago from the Heroes Reforged channel, here's the link to the full one hour interview:
Why Genndy Tartakovsky Turned Down Running Lucasfilm Animation! - Heroes Reforged
I'm impressed that Tartakovsky has seemingly read everything Robert E. Howard wrote. He even namechecks Sailor Steve Costigan, a character I knew nothing about until he appeared the recent Titan Savage Sword of Conan #10. Genndy seems to really knows his REH! Bodes well for the show.
The logo for Genndy Tartakovsky's new Conan series is identical to one on the original Lancer paperbacks
What a neat little detail. I think it shows how invested Tartakovsky is in the history of the character.
What are you hoping to see in the new animated series? I'll start with mine: Title Cards
I'm so excited by the news that Genndy Tartakovsky will be helming the new Conan series! It's truly a match made in heaven. The show description sounds like it will be amazing:
>“After finding love in the pirate queen, Bêlit, a battle-hardened Conan defies gods, fate and even death to save her from a dark sorcery that threatens to destroy everything.”
I wanted to throw it open to everyone on the subreddit: What are you hoping to see in this series? If you're anything like me you've been thinking about a potential Conan show for years so this can be a thread for sharing our long-simmering thoughts.
For me, I've always thought a Conan animated series should have painted/illustrated title cards for each episode. I'm a big fan of Batman: The Animated Series and every episode of that show started with an illustrated title card that focused on some theme or image from the episode:
I'd love it if the Conan show did the same. Illustrated covers are such a huge part of Conan's history, whether we're talking about Frazetta's Lancer/Ace paperback covers or Savage Sword. The comics would also often have big splash pages with the title:
Every episode starting with some iconic image of Conan just makes sense to me and would be in keeping with the character's history.
So that's my hope. But what about the rest of you? Is there a particular story you'd like to see adapted? A character from the comics you'd like to see? What's on your wish list for the show?
I slept on Church of Misery for a long time. That was a huge mistake, they're incredible!
Might be my new all-time favorite doom metal band and I only started listening to them a few weeks ago. I've been into doom/stoner rock for many years but for some reason I can't pinpoint I never listened to Church of Misery. A few weeks ago on reddit I saw their name come up in a recommendation thread for bluesy doom. So I decided to check them out.
Holy. SHIT. It's wild to me that with all their many lineup changes they've been so consistent with their releases. Every LP they've released blew me away. I kept expecting some drop in quality at some point and it never happened. Tatsu Mikami is not only an insane riffmaster, he's a brilliant composer as well. Every album is a pure banger, there's not a single dud in the lot. Over thirty years of playing and not a single mediocre record. I just discovered them but I feel pretty strongly they have the most consistent discography of any doom metal band.
So yeah, I know compared to most of you that I'm way late to the party on this one. But I just had to share because I worship them now. If you haven't listened to them because you're put off by their serial killer themed lyrics you should set that aside and give them a shot. Just killer, groovy riffs that will absolutely melt your face.
This is sick. A Conan artwork tribute video edited to Black Sabbath! Incredibly well done
youtu.beWhich sorcerer foe of Conan do you think has the coolest sounding name?
Just a refresher for everyone, here are the names of all the evil sorcerers from the original Conan stories by Robert E. Howard:
- Xaltotun (Hour of the Dragon)
- Zogar Sag (Beyond the Black River)
- Thugra Khotan aka Natohk (Black Colossus)
- Thoth-Amon (The Phoenix on the Sword)
- The Master of Yimsha (The People of the Black Circle)
- Tsotha-lanti (The Scarlet Citadel)
- Yara (The Tower of the Elephant)
I think that's all of them but if I missed one let me know. I didn't include Thulsa Doom since he's a Kull villain. Plus I think Doom would win by default if I included him. I mean c'mon, the guy has the word "Doom" in his name for pete's sake!
So my pick for coolest sounding name: Thugra Khotan. It just sounds harsh and guttural. He's also the coolest visually in my opinion, he's like a reanimated desiccated corpse.
Last place I'm giving to the Master of Yimsha. A cool character but his name is kind of boring by comparison to all the others.
So who's your pick for the coolest name?
Arik Roper has done cover art for a lot of classic metal albums and he just seems a natural fit to me for Savage Sword. His art is often these lush fantasy landscapes with a sword and sorcery vibe. I know folks like Jim Zub read this subreddit, so I figured I'd shoot my shot and put him out there as someone they should look into hiring. Hopefully he's not too expensive!
I also wanted to open it up for discussion: Which artists who haven't worked on Savage Sword would you like to see do a cover?
