I can’t wait until we’re on Disventure Camp season 25 and Gabby is having her 8th independence arc. Why I don’t like Gabby this season

I hate what they’re doing with Gabby this season especially due to the fact that it’s literally exactly what she did in DCAS. It’s clear that the writers like her, they want her to stick around, however they have no idea what to do with her. She has no interesting connections or character arcs she’s just there. And they give her moments in an attempt to get us to sympathize with her but it’s not even clear what her struggle IS. Therefore, when she puts on the trademark Disventure camp sad expression it’s hard to emphasize with her due to the fact that we know nothing about her own personal struggles beyond the fact that she’s been calling “annoying” her entire life. But it’s never explored like how every other character gets explored. Everything detail we get about Gabby is just thrown at us with little to no explanation or overall relevance to anything happening around her.

I just feel like this stems from the fact that DC writers have no clue what they want Gabby to BE. Is she “comedic” relief? Is she a character that we’re supposed to take seriously? Is she a support character for other more important characters? Or is she herself supposed to be considered a main character? What I feel COULD have worked for her this season is if they delved into her being a character that masks her pain with humor. But for some reason they gave that plot line to TOM? He’s never displayed that trait like…ever but is placed as a mirror to Natalia when really it should’ve been GABBY who should’ve been Natalia’s foil. Gabby should’ve been the one to form a friendly rivalry with Natalia. It would’ve made her far more interesting now than what we ended up getting with her because it’s in line with her actual pre-existing character and would’ve opened up for FAR more depth and nuance. Especially since the Tom vs Natalia rivalry that took up so much screen time ended on such a whimper that not even the surrounding contestant gave a fuck about what was happening.

You might be thinking, “well then what’s tom going to do?!” I’d force HIM into Gabby’s role. He’s much more suited to playing peace keeper than she is and we don’t NEED more of Tom. He’s already a three-dimensional fleshed out character whether you like him or not. Putting him in a more passive role only serves to not have people get more sour on him than they already are. Having Tom hog so much screen time having doing the same in DCAS and having his own two season show was NOT a good move. Having Gabby actually stand on her own two feet against Natalia is vastly more interesting to me.

But instead of getting a compelling storyline about facing her past trauma and helping someone with the same coping mechanisms as her she’s being forced into a passive role that she’s NEVER been in before. Even at her worst Gabby has always at least been an active player making her own choices. But in fvf she’s just stuck in the middle of some lackluster friendship between Tom and Natalia. She’s not allowed to have any interesting and complex thoughts on anything happening around her. All she says is “let’s be friends guys!” And that’s the extent of her role in that plot. She just sits around and meanders while Tom and Natalia figure out their shit.

And even now she’s claiming that she’s “playing her own game” but she’s just doing whatever anyone TELLS her to do. Yet another example of this season forcing Gabby to be a passive character when she’s not BUILT for that role. Gabby is and has always been the chaotic neutral Character. She’s always been an active player in the game. In DC1 it was HER who decided to use her idol to save Ellie, SHE had a rivalry with Dan (whether you liked it or not). In DCAS SHE was the one who flipped to the villains alliance, it was GABBY who made the move to eliminate Tess, it was HER who decided she was going to help Grett no matter what. And yet her depiction in FvF shows her as a passive crybaby who does nothing but what people TELL her to do. That’s why I hate this new “Gabby Independence” arc because that’s not what it is. She’s had this same arc in DCAS and it was surprisingly executed far better than whatever is going on in this season.

It’s shocking how far she’s made it because she’s done nothing to deserve making it as far as she has. She’s made no game moves, have no interesting connections, no character arc besides stop being judgy ig???, and yet she’s still here. Just AROUND. And this isn’t meant to hate on Gabby or anyone who likes her this is just how I personally feel towards her this season.

TLDR; Gabby is being forced into a passive role when she’s never been in that role before and being passive contradicts her entire pre-existing character.

You’re telling me that Sakura gets to actually FIGHT in the storm games and lowkey defeat Sasuke instead of just standing there getting saved?

This is MUCH better than what happened in the Manga/Anime and honestly what we were all EXPECTING when Sakura seemed so determined to kill Sasuke only to fold under zero pressure. Sasuke is literally going blind and is weak from just defeating Danzo so Sakura actually stood a really good chance here. It’s honestly just another example of Kishimoto’s weird “I don’t know how to write female characters” BS and his weird need to always have Sakura embarrassing herself. Both of which can turn into a whole OTHER conversation.

Why I think that Ally’s elimination was bad and how it played in not only her face but multiple other characters’ faces as well

Ally, for the majority of the season, has been struggling with her agency in the game. Her feelings of not doing enough and letting other people control her game for her were the driving point of her character arc this season. Her double idol with Benji was actually a great representation of that. She can’t use the idol without ACTIVELY making a move and regaining her agency. And her eliminating Benji was actually really good…only for her to continue to let other people dictate her game and make her look stupid. Especially this episode. When they actively go out of their way to villainize her for playing the game with Tom and Gabby. They want us to think negatively of Ally especially when tom says “I don’t want to believe Natalia but it IS Ally.” And then on top of that they strip away her agency in her own elimination by her not using the idol despite her KNOWING that something was off. This elimination was objectively bad not only for the story but for her character arc as a whole.

It also makes Lake look so much more stupid than she’s been looking all season. She’s actively eliminating her alliance members because of her petty grudge not only making Spencer mad at her but also Rosa. And at least when Spencer eliminated Bruno he had a reason(as flimsy as it might have been). It purposely makes her come off as petty and vindictive when in past seasons that was never the basis of her character. Lake is compassionate. Yes. Lake is empathetic. Yes. She knows what she believes in and won’t bend her morals. Yes. But she’s not an idiot. She knows when people are using her and she knows when it’s best to keep her mouth shut about things. She knows how to talk her ways out of situations as seen in AS. She would’ve managed to flip Tess if not for some random reason Tess wasnt absolutely sure that comp beast Lake could be Ellie in a tie breaker. So it makes Lake look really stupid in a way that just continues to sour her character.

And Tom and Gabby become even more unlikeable than they’ve been all season. Tom continues to think negative of Ally and just drags her throughout the entire after-challenge section into the elimination. I don’t know why the narrative wanted to paint Ally as this evil person that’s always flipping and betraying her allies out of malice when every time she’s flipping this season it’s been out of desperation. They’re showing us one thing but the narrative is telling us another through Tom and Gabby. Some would say it’s complex but in this case it’s contradictory because it directly leads to Ally’s downfall. And Gabby is dragging Ally despite not even knowing her😭and yet she was crying not even a dozen episodes ago about being called annoying? Make it make sense. The writing for these two is so inconsistent it hurts.

Overall, this elimination is one of the ones that frames everyone as stupid as hell just for the sake of eliminating the character they wanted to eliminate.

Oh I’m so scared they’re going to be the new Jake vs Ally…

I rlly hope this doesn’t last all the way until late merge just like the Jacky rivalry. Whenever Lake and Spencer interact Lake just seems so out of character to me…I get what they’re going for with Bruno reminding Lake of herself but the thing is…Spencer didn’t really DO anything to warrant such distaste from Lake. And then trying to suddenly push the narrative that Spencer is so mean to Bruno is odd considering that he’s only “rude” to him when Lake is on screen. Other than that Spencer is very cordial with Bruno so this entire plot makes NO sense to me and it feels so contrived especially with Lake acting as the aggressor.
