Archives, 1948: Einstein, Arendt, etc denounce Israel and “Begin” party as fascist in letter to the New York Times
Original text copied here
“To the Editors of the New York Times:
Among the most disturbing political phenomena of our times is the emergence in the newly created state of Israel of the "Freedom Party" (Tnuat Haherut), a political party closely akin in its organization, methods, political philosophy and social appeal to the Nazi and Fascist parties. It was formed out of the membership and following of the former Irgun Zvai Leumi, a terrorist, right-wing, chauvinist organization in Palestine.
The current visit of Menachem Begin, leader of this party, to the United States is obviously calculated to give the impression of American support for his party in the coming Israeli elections, and to cement political ties with conservative Zionist elements in the United States. Several Americans of national repute have lent their names to welcome his visit. It is inconceivable that those who oppose fascism throughout the world, if correctly informed as to Mr. Begin's political record and perspectives, could add their names and support to the movement he represents.
Before irreparable damage is done by way of financial contributions, public manifestations in Begin's behalf, and the creation in Palestine of the impression that a large segment of America supports Fascist elements in Israel, the American public must be informed as to the record and objectives of Mr. Begin and his movement.
The public avowals of Begin's party are no guide whatever to its actual character. Today they speak of freedom, democracy and anti-imperialism, whereas until recently they openly preached the doctrine of the Fascist state. It is in its actions that the terrorist party betrays its real character; from its past actions we can judge what it may be expected to do in the future.
Attack on Arab Village
A shocking example was their behavior in the Arab village of Deir Yassin. This village, off the main roads and surrounded by Jewish lands, had taken no part in the war, and had even fought off Arab bands who wanted to use the village as their base. On April 9 (THE NEW YORK TIMES), terrorist bands attacked this peaceful village, which was not a military objective in the fighting, killed most of its inhabitants240 men, women, and childrenand kept a few of them alive to parade as captives through the streets of Jerusalem. Most of the Jewish community was horrified at the deed, and the Jewish Agency sent a telegram of apology to King Abdullah of Trans-Jordan. But the terrorists, far from being ashamed of their act, were proud of this massacre, publicized it widely, and invited all the foreign correspondents present in the country to view the heaped corpses and the general havoc at Deir Yassin.
The Deir Yassin incident exemplifies the character and actions of the Freedom Party.
Within the Jewish community they have preached an admixture of ultranationalism, religious mysticism, and racial superiority. Like other Fascist parties they have been used to break strikes, and have themselves pressed for the destruction of free trade unions. In their stead they have proposed corporate unions on the Italian Fascist model.
During the last years of sporadic anti-British violence, the IZL and Stern groups inaugurated a reign of terror in the Palestine Jewish community. Teachers were beaten up for speaking against them, adults were shot for not letting their children join them. By gangster methods, beatings, window-smashing, and wide-spread robberies, the terrorists intimidated the population and exacted a heavy tribute.
The people of the Freedom Party have had no part in the constructive achievements in Palestine. They have reclaimed no land, built no settlements, and only detracted from the Jewish defense activity. Their much-publicized immigration endeavors were minute, and devoted mainly to bringing in Fascist compatriots.
Discrepancies Seen
The discrepancies between the bold claims now being made by Begin and his party, and their record of past performance in Palestine bear the imprint of no ordinary political party. This is the unmistakable stamp of a Fascist party for whom terrorism (against Jews, Arabs, and British alike), and misrepresentation are means, and a "Leader State" is the goal.
In the light of the foregoing considerations, it is imperative that the truth about Mr. Begin and his movement be made known in this country. It is all the more tragic that the top leadership of American Zionism has refused to campaign against Begin's efforts, or even to expose to its own constituents the dangers to Israel from support to Begin.
The undersigned therefore take this means of publicly presenting a few salient facts concerning Begin and his party; and of urging all concerned not to support this latest manifestation of fascism.”

Channel 5 with more fantastic coverage of the situation in the occupied territories. Andrew was targeted by a pack of inbred settlers during the process. He’s lucky he wasn’t shot.
Well done channel 5!

NYT Lead Regarding UN Report - Typical of this Pro-Israel Rag
As is standard with the NYT - and beautifully explicated in Adam Johnson's book, "How to Sell A Genocide" - the subtitle of their lead article detailing the report is a parroting of Israeli Propaganda. The very first sentence features quotes from Israeli Hasbarists and government officials claiming the report is a "libelous sham", and how the investigation relied on a "fundamentally flawed mechanism". Interesting they would choose to lead with this, but not surprising.

I suggest reading the actual 92 page report from the UN. It’s sickening and an incredibly difficult read, but it’s important to confront this kind of evil directly. This is what our money has been funding, and these are the people our governments have been running cover for.
This is what Israel means with its “right to defend itself”.

youtube.comAA and Suicide
For context, I've spent time in a lot of "recovery" and substance use spaces.
I've worked in Safe Injection Sites, treatment centers, and sought support at SMART and Recovery Dharma. I also spent 20 years in and around AA, and about ten years very active in 12 step fellowships.
Nowhere did I encounter more death by suicide than in 12 step fellowships.
I've known multiple people who killed themselves because they "couldn't get it", even more who killed themselves after "relapsing" with long term sobriety, and many who were sober, had unresolved mental health issues that AA couldn't address, and ended up killing themselves as a result.
I saw far less of this amongst people practicing harm reduction or engaging in SMART or other recovery modalities.
This is something that requires a lot more discussion. I think AA and its shame based "all or nothing" disease model is a significant driver of deaths by suicide. I also believe that had I still been indoctrinated when I "relapsed" after 15 years, I too would have killed myself, and the only time I've been actively suicidal is when I was in and around the 12-step fellowships.
Curious about what other people think.
One year without a single meeting
This is the longest stretch I’ve gone without a 12 step meeting since 2007.
I had periods where I’d go maybe once every 6 months, or a few times here and there as I distanced myself more and more, but this is the longest I’ve gone without a single meeting since I was brought to the “fellowship” when I was 24.
It’s also the healthiest my perception of and relationship to drugs and alcohol have ever been, and by many measures, the most successful and clear headed I’ve ever been. I am not an “addict” or “alcoholic”. Those are labels I’ve totally abandoned. I do not define myself by my sobriety, consider myself in recovery, or look at my past substance use as anything other than a very normal reaction to a very traumatizing, very complex set of circumstances.
I smoke weed every night and have no issue with it. I still exercise daily, enjoy a rich and deep set of creative pursuits, and work the best job I’ve ever had with a fantastic employer.
I had a beer about three weeks ago and left it at that.
I’ve done an enormous amount of work on myself over the last several years and the work continues.
I have a good life, and I have no desire to blow that up or subject myself to the arbitrary dictates of a religious cult.
I think I’m getting closer to really being “free” from the brainwashing and terror that we’re foisted on me by 12 step fellowships. I see people who I know that are still involved and feel bad for them. People who haven’t drank or done drugs in decades recounting war stories as if they just happened yesterday. It’s a truly absurd way to go about living.
I’ve really enjoyed this group. Thanks for your support this past year and counting
One Beer
Hi everyone. Many of you know my story. Was sober for a long time, went through a lot of traumatic shit, experimented with drinking and some not so great drugs again, realized it wasn’t for me, and have been working on stopping again for a little bit.
I went 8 months without any booze. Life has been quite challenging again as of late. Job is great but pressure is mounting, finances have been very tight and stressful, another friend of mine died one month ago (overdose), I lost my dog in a divorce process, and I’m just generally very overworked and under slept.
I had a single pint of beer today. I don’t want anymore. The amount of guilt and shame I feel is not normal. I feel so awful about this. I’ve been deprogramming for years now, and still, this pernicious guilt is eating at me. I don’t want to get fucked up. I don’t want anymore alcohol. It was a momentary slip and im experiencing so much shame about it. I don’t want anymore, but still, all those voices and that incessant shame is there.
I just needed to let it out. It’s been a long time since I’ve posted.
Hi everyone.
I’ve been a lover of greyhounds for over a decade now. My ex-wife and I got our first in 2014. He passed from bone cancer in 2021. We also fostered many hounds over those years, which was a beautiful experience.
We got our last dog, Freya, in late 2022. It took 18 months before I was ready for another hound. I adored Freya from the start. She was a brood mama from Ireland, and she was so sweet and had such a wonderful personality.
My wife and I separated in November of 2024. We co-parented our dog from then until last November. We exchanged her last November, and I haven’t seen her since. It’s a long, painful story, but my ex basically decided she couldn’t co-parent anymore and moved two hours outside of the city. I didn’t know that when we exchanged Freya in November, there was a chance that I would never see her again.
I’ve experienced a ton of loss over the last 10 years. In that loss, Freya was a source of warmth and light. The pain I feel over this hasn’t gotten any better. I think of her all the time. I’m reminded of her all the time. It’s so painful to know she’s still alive, but I’m grieving her as though she’s no longer here.
I feel like the pain has only got worse. I want my dog back.
Thanks for your kindness.
