Please Advise: Buying a Home in Baltimore city

Hello Baltimoreans,

I realize I might be asking an incredibly biased group, but I wanted to gauge everyone’s thoughts. My boyfriend and I have been debating purchasing a townhome in Baltimore City, with an estimated timeline of about 1.5 years from now. We’ve both been to Baltimore many times and understand the city well - good, bad, and ugly. I personally love the city and all it has to offer, while my partner is less sold on it but still likes it overall. We feel it may be a good location to strike a balance of city lifestyle while not breaking the bank.

My extremely ill-researched take is that buying a row house in Baltimore may not be the most lucrative investment (in the short or long term), but it does seem like one of those rare cities where buying might actually be cheaper than renting (factoring in quality of residence too). For context, we currently reside in the DC metro area where cost of living is significantly higher.

So… what are everyone’s thoughts? Is it worth owning in Baltimore? Does anyone have personal experience with row home ownership? What are some of the challenges as well as the bright spots? Thanks!
