Athens at Night: The Parthenon uncovered, and an honest look at late-night safety

Hello everyone!

Honestly, the highlight of my night walk wasn't even the empty streets. It was the view of the Acropolis.

The scaffolding around the Parthenon was installed the year I was born. My entire generation had seen this wonder of the world either fenced off or in historical photographs. The sight of the Parthenon illuminated at night, completely clean and free of those steel structures, seemed almost surreal.

After enjoying this view, I spent Friday and Saturday walking and driving around central Athens to see what the safety situation was like...

Frankly, the city has improved significantly in the last few years. It's definitely not as dangerous as the forums portray, although some areas still require extra attention.

Here's the real situation on the ground:

Omonia Square and the side streets (the main area to pay attention to): Omonia Square itself is clean, bright, and completely safe. But as soon as you turn into the side streets—heading toward the Central Market, Patissia, or Metaxourgeio—the atmosphere quickly changes. There are many dark, abandoned alleys. Just stick to the main, illuminated roads and don't wander alone through dark side streets at 3 a.m.

Exarchia: Honestly, it's a very lively place! The cafes and bars were packed with young people all weekend. There's also a heavy police presence, so the area is quiet. Just carry your ID or passport—random document checks by the police are quite common here.

Victoria and Agia Panteleimon: It was a pleasant surprise. Five years ago, there were some rather questionable places here. Now they're gone, replaced by new street food stalls and much better street lighting. Train Station and Bus Terminals: The area around Larissa Train Station is very bright and clean. The bus terminals (Kifissos/Liossia) are located in quiet industrial areas. They're not dangerous, just very inconvenient; it's difficult to get there by metro, only by taxi.

Taxi (and how to avoid being scammed): Great news – there's no longer a "double night rate" in Athens! So taking a taxi after the metro closes won't break the bank. BUT, never hail a random taxi on the sidewalk at night. You can easily take a "scenic tour" through Glyfada for just 2 kilometers. Just use Bolt or Free Now.

Overall, Athens is quite safe if you stay out of the dark alleys of Omonia at night, keep an eye on your phone/wallet, and use taxi apps.

Hope this helps anyone with a late flight! If you want to see what these places look like at 2 a.m. before your trip, I made a short video: https://youtu.be/vBpS1Q0jNX0

Feel free to ask any questions below – I'd be happy to help!

Late night magic along Panepistimiou: The Athenian Trilogy

Walked down Panepistimiou Street the other night and couldn't resist capturing the Neoclassical Trilogy (Academy, University, and National Library).

I’ve always felt these buildings look like they belong in a myth, so I did a little sky-composite edit to give them the dramatic, starry atmosphere they deserve.

Which one of the three is your personal favorite architecture-wise?

More of Athens at night for you all!

Following up on my last post: I took a quick walk from Syntagma towards the Arch of Hadrian. Here’s how the city looks after sunset:

  • Arch of Hadrian
  • Russian Church
  • St. Paul's Anglican Church

And a question for you guys: I keep getting asked about safety in Athens at night. How dangerous is it to walk around after midnight? (I’m usually carrying camera gear, which makes me a bit more cautious).

So, I’ve decided to put together a short documentary about it. I’ll be heading out this Friday night to film. I’ve already got requests to cover Larissa Station and the bus terminals at Liossion and Kifissou.

What other locations worry you? Let me know – I still have time to adjust my route before Friday!

Evening at Hotel Grande Bretagne — Night Falls on the City

Following up on my previous photo post.

While shooting at the Grande Bretagne Hotel, I took this short video at sunset. The way the light changes in the square is simply stunning.

I just wanted to share the atmosphere. Are there any other spots in central Athens that you think look better at night than during the day?

Athens during the blue hour. A few long exposures I took at Syntagma Square

When the evening mountain breeze begins to push the day's heat out of the streets and squares of Athens, the city truly comes alive.

Last night, I decided to linger around Syntagma Square with my camera to capture that stunning transition from sunset to deep twilight (the classic "blue hour").

  1. The Parliament Building — a classic view, but on a long exposure with the light trails from passing buses, it looks completely different.
  2. The legendary Hotel Grande Bretagne — love how its warm lighting contrasts with the deep blue sky.
  3. The view of the square from above — life is always buzzing here. Light streaks, blurred silhouettes of passersby, a street musician on the keys, and that unmistakable evening vibe of the city.

For those planning a trip: definitely come here at twilight. During the day, the air above the marble pavement shimmers and melts with the heat, but in the evening, it’s the best place to just sit on the steps with a cold coffee and watch the rhythm of Athens.

Which shot do you like best? And where is your favorite spot in Athens for an evening stroll once the heat dies down?

Best Pro Video settings for low-light / night street filming?

Hey guys,

Planning to do some late-night street filming in the city this week using my Galaxy S25 Ultra. I want to capture the dark alleys and streetlights without getting a massive amount of noise and grain.

Should I just trust the stock Video mode with Auto Night optimization, or is it better to go full Pro Video mode?

If Pro mode is the way, what’s your sweet spot for ISO and shutter speed to keep the footage sharp and clean without making it look like a blurry mess?

Appreciate any tips or workarounds from people who actually shoot video at night!
