First try with prongs

I tried making a ring with prongs. I kind of did it but as you can see the photos, prongs are not aligned right and there is a gap under the stone because apperently I made the space too narrow. I can make it wider but I don't know how to align prongs properly. Wheh I am soldering one of them, weld on the other can melt and it gets skewed.

The material is brass.

Edit: I am watching some videos about it. I see some people using something like clay to keep parts in position. It looks like useful, is it just regular clay? Also I see some people don't use it and parts just stay in their position. I guess when you do everything just right up to the soldering, they stay in position (maybe with capillary action)

New practice ring with brilliant cut stone

I made this ring with brass. Sorry for irregularities, I don't have power tools yet so it takes too much time to finish

I am learning silversmithing. I have practiced soldering on brass and thought learned it but I cannot solder this my first silver ring. I tried several times, sometimes the solder filled the half of the gap (i made sure the gap is really small) and sometimes it doesn't flow to the gap at all. Now it has a dent on it and i guess i have to scrap it since it is deeper than I can get rid of.

Why do you think it happened?
