Competition amongst choir members?
I am Mark, a 24 Filipino countertenor singing in the Soprano section in our choir (mainly Soprano 2 but our choir director wants me to sing Soprano 1 lines). I joined my choir almost 1 year ago and during the audition, one of the members said that “Uh oh, (name drop of their best Soprano 1 member) will get insecure/envious because of you.” I didn’t know how to react during that time because it may have sounded a compliment to me but it may spark a competition to the person they mentioned or even the other sopranos.
So I passed the auditions, then comes the rehearsal a few days after the audition. I felt that the sopranos (younger than me) aren’t happy that I was placed in their section. I mean I might just be overthinking about this but when we were on a sunday serve and it was time to give a sign if peace I looked at them and said “peace be with you” and they didn’t even bother to look at me cause I was placed between them and they gave sign of peace to each other. Back to the rehearsals, they have this alto friend which I can feel that she felt threatened that a male singer is placed in a higher voice section than her because during the rehearsal she was talking with the same sopranos and keeps on telling that “I am pissed that one of the altos in our school choir got promoted to soprano. Iniipit niya lang naman yung voice niya” then she looked at me after saying this.
Based on my assumption, I feel like the younger sopranos thinks that I am a threat to them and in their minds, they might be thinking as if my presence overshadows their roles, if that makes sense. But I don’t really view them as a competitor. For the alto, she might be thinking that I feel superior to her because I am a male who surpassed her vocal range. But I really don’t believe in the vocal hierarchy in choirs, I believe that being an alto is impressive, or dare to say even harder than singing the soprano lines, I think they give the shimmer to the overall sound of the choir. On the other hand, I also observed that the older sopranos are more welcoming and approachable.
