First time - phylobates terribilis or ranitomeya variabilis

I’ve been interested in dart frogs for a long time now. After just finishing my ball pythons bioactive enclosure I’m itching to have beautiful frogs in a smaller but beautiful terrarium.

My two species I like and have been considering are phylobates terribilis (specifically orange blackfoot), or ranitomeya variabilis southern.

I like the idea of the terribilis because they (from what I’ve heard) are beginner friendly, bold, loud, and big. The only con I have is I would need a relatively large tank if I was to keep 3-4.

I just came across the variabilis and really like their colors, and the size of an enclosure for a group of them.

I haven’t looked into much more about them but if anyone could share their personal experiences with either species that would be great! Unrelated, but when I’d eventually have the experience I’d like to try breeding whatever kind I’d get.

Raising ambient temperature without exceeding surface heat

TEMPERATURES IN PICTURE ARE NOT CURRENT. Right now I have my cool side at about 80 degrees, and the hot side at 84 degrees ambient. In the picture, there is two pieces of cork bark that are pretty high up, one being under the 75w halogen, the other being under the 100w dhp. I also have an 80w rhp in the center, because I can’t move it anymore right due to how the enclosure is built with support bars. All three heating systems are set up to thermostats, where the probes are places high up near the cork bark pieces set to 104.

I can’t turn up the dhp or halogen more without causing the top cork barks to get hotter than 104 degrees, and I can’t turn up the rhp without turning the cool side into a warm side.

I’m considering getting insulation foam but I’m also worried about how that would look on the outside asthetically. Any recommendations?

In my home I have 4 cats with my family. 2 we adopted from a home and 2 we saved as strays. The 2 strays have always been a little bit skiddish. We have had the 2 strays for about 9 years.

one cat Chleo is better in terms of touching an affection, and is only skiddish when she isn’t laying down somewhere.

My other cat Bane is almost bipolar when it comes to affection. She sometimes comes up to you like she wants to be pet but stays just out of reach, and if you try to go up to her she kind of trots away. I’m not sure if it’s her trying to say she wants food, but sometimes it lines up that way. I’ve also observed that late in the night she’s the complete opposite. By that I mean at somewhere in the AMs, I can go up to her on the couch and she will roll over and pur and knead while I pet her. Bouncing off of that as well, if it’s only me and I pick her up, she will knead and pur on my back but if anyone comes upstairs or downstairs toward us she wants to jump off. She also just stays out of reach by using the chairs and tables in the kitchen/dining room (where she usually is).

Luckily she likes me a lot (for some reason) and just before posting this I coaxed her out and pet her with a brush and she was happy with it. And to add on, when I was petting her she rubbed up against things in front of me, and only rubbed against me if she was directly behind me.

I just want to make her more confident so that she doesn’t feel the need to trot away from us. Is it a process of just brush and pets maybe with some treats as well?

My bioactive has been setting up for about a month, I’ve seen these very small little plants sprouting up, what are they?
