Mac Pro 7,1 Infinity Fabric Link Issues

I recently picked up an IF Link bridge (A2666) for my dual W6900X MPX modules; however, when installed, my display is flickering intermittently and I had a recent crash related to watchdogd and WindowServer which seem to be GPU related. I tried resetting SMC, resetting NVRAM, and reseating the IF Link bridge but the flickering persisted.

I removed the bridge and the computer appears to be working normally. Has anyone else run into this issue? Could it be a bad bridge? The bridge does work, I see Infinity Fabric Link Enabled in System Report and the LLM tool I'm using works with it (I get faster prompt processing when it's installed and I enable IF Link in the LLM software, so I know it's working).

What models should I test with ToshLLM? GPUs available: 2x W6900X, W6800X Duo, 2x Vega II Duo

Finally playing around with ToshLLM while trying to narrow down which MPX GPU(s) to keep. I am completely new to LLMs and local AI and do not have a tech background, so the learning curve has been a bit steep.

I have 2x W6900X, W6800X Duo, and 2x Vega II Duo on hand. I have the IF Link for the W6900X. Obviously the W6900X limits me to 64GB across 2 GPUs. If I end up keeping the W6800X Duo I will probably look for a second and an IF Link Bridge.

So far I've only tested the W6900X(s) (single GPU and pair, with/without IF Link bridge). So far I'm not seeing any difference whatsoever with IF Link on my W6900X pair. Getting the same exact ts with llama 3.3 70B Q5_K_S with the IF Link bridge installed/enabled as with it not installed.

Top 2 results are with IF Link disabled in menu. Identical results with both layers and tensors.

This was my fastest benchmark. Qwen3.6 35B-A3B UD-Q4_K_S got 69ts. Qwen3.6 35B-A3B UD-Q8_K_XL was a little slower with 61ts.

This size model seemed to perform better splitting layers vs tensors. I was seeing about 40ts with tensor split enabled.

Which MPX GPUs to keep? Dual Vega II Duo, Dual W6900X, or W6800X Duo?

I have a bunch of MPX GPUs and want to sell most of them. I have 2x Vega II Duo, 2x W6900X (with IF bridge), and 1x W6800X Duo. I’m a bit torn because all have their plusses and minuses. The Vega II Duos get me 128GB of HBM2 but they’re an older architecture and very power hungry. the W6900X pair only gets me 64GB of VRAM but they’re the fastest individual GPUs made for the Mac Pro. The W6800X Duo seems like the best option but I’d need to find another one and an IF bridge.

Unfortunately, I don’t really have time to test the GPUs extensively and I overextended myself a bit acquiring the machines they came out of. I was initially planning to keep 2 2019 Mac Pros but am now set on downsizing to just 1 machine and 1-2 GPUs.

Not quite maxed out yet

I saw some posts recently sharing their 7,1 builds and figured I'd share mine since it's had some recent additions. I know this machine is dated, but even for being 7 years old and approaching obsolescence, it's quite a capable machine. I'm a huge fan of the design, serviceability, and expandability of this chassis and it'll probably go down as my favorite computer of all time.

I'm also wondering what other people think about the value proposition on these. They've gone down a ton in price and lower-spec models can be had for a grand. They're dated but with prices for everything else skyrocketing I feel like these will have some legs for a bit.

Anyway, here's my spec:

  • 16-Core Xeon
  • 96GB DDR4
  • 2TB Apple SSD
  • 2x W6800X with IF bridge (have a pair of W6900X coming next week, and a pair of Vega II Duos in another machine)
  • OWC Accelsior 4M2 4TB
  • Promise Pegasus J2i with 2x4TB HGST 7200RPM HDDs
  • Wheels! Scored these cheap on eBay and sold the feet, so they only cost ~$100 after everything

P.S. does anyone know how to tell if IF Link is working? I just got the bridge yesterday and can't figure out a good way to verify.

Does anyone know if a Scenera Next will fit front facing in a 996.2 coupe?

I want to start taking my toddler for little rides and we own one of these already for travel. We also have 2 Nuna Rava car seats for our daily drivers so I really don’t want to have to buy a fourth car seat for one kid 😅

[US-CA] [H] PayPal, Curiosity [W] My old green cerakote prototype HHKB/viper layout custom I sold ~8 years ago

The keyboard: https://imgur.com/a/WzBKH

Seriously, does anyone know where this went? I sold it but can't remember to who. Not entirely sure I even want to buy it back, mostly just want to see the thing. This was an early prototype for a GB from back in the day that I was given by a friend who also got one. We received them as unfinished aluminum and had them cerakoted.

Sharing my collection 8 years after stepping away from the hobby (FMJ 60, Duck Mini v1, OG Cherry)

Edit: I added some links to some of my old boards in case anyone wants to see some of them (:

Hi everyone, I wanted to share my small collection after a long break from the hobby. I was really involved with mechanical keyboards from 2013-2018 under a different reddit username. I was a moderator on r/mechmarket, helped organize the first Washington, DC keyboard meetup, and was really into early custom keyboards and rare/old OG Cherry stuff. In 2018 I sold off nearly my entire collection, which included an unbuilt OTD 356mini v1, Duck Eagle v2, LZ CLS, Hammer 60, a NIB Compaq G80-1838HPU, lots of other OG Cherry keyboards/keycaps.

From my original collection, I only kept the keyboards/keycaps pictured here (except the Compaq G80-1838HPU and G81 SAV keycaps, those were recent lucky finds!)

  • FMJ 60, carbon fiber plate, Gon NerD PCB, vintage MX black switches with OG Cherry SAV dye subs
  • Duck Mini v1 (AKA Duck Poker), I was told this was built by BunnyLake and I believe it's a red alu plate and a GH60 PCB with MX blacks (not sure of the vintage)
  • 2x G80-3700s. I enjoy needing 2-3 adapters to get these to work with a modern Mac.

Anyway, it's really interesting to see how much the hobby has changed and how far things have come along in the years since I've been away. My memory is a bit hazy and unfortunately I've forgotten many names/usernames from back in the day, but I got to meet some really great people while I was active.

Cherry dye sub keycaps

I’m an old timer who stepped away from the hobby in 2018. Have had dozens of keyboards (including some top shelf stuff like OTD, Duck, LZ, FMJ, etc) and basically everything under the sun leycap wise from that era (OG cherry dye subs, OG doubleshots, GMK, BSP, Cherry POMs, GMK, every Signature Plastic profile).

Before I left the hobby GMK was working on Cherry-profile PBT keycaps but it seems this never materialized. Other Cherry-profile PBT caps seem to have lower quality dye sublimation and are usually a touch thinner than Cherry ones; however the big issue was always warping/sink marks that made the caps look misaligned. Has anyone managed to make a better quality PBT keycap in the last 7-8 years?

I’ve been checking into the hobby again lately and have seen so many developments that were unheard of 12-15 years ago.

[US-CA] [H] PayPal [W] 5 specific OG Cherry dye sub keycaps

Hi everyone,

If anyone happens to have the following OG Cherry dye sub keys, or a partial set of dye subs that includes them, I would love to purchase them: left shift, 2x control, alt, and left arrow.

A long time ago under a different username I was a mod on this subreddit and about as deep into the keyboard hobby as you can get. It's been 7-8 years since I mostly left the hobby but I lucked out and found a set of Cherry SAV dye subs for cheap from Latvia. Unfortunately, despite asking the seller to package them carefully, the keyboard was shipped to me bubble wrapped in a bag and several of the keys broke.

Edit: Oh yeah I have confirmed trades on r/GameSale and r/hardwareswap

How are U.S. tariffs calculated for products made in countries that no longer exist?

Purchased an item located in the EU but originally made in West Germany, which ceased to exist in 1990 before the EU was founded.

The only other item I've imported was shipped from the UK and made in Japan, but the tariffs were calculated for the UK ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hi, I made a post recently looking for advice running local LLMs on my 2019 Mac Pro. At the time, I was split on what GPUs to use, but I happened upon a really good deal for a pair of Vega II Duo GPUs (4x Vega II 32GB GPUs for 128GB total HBM2 with 1Tb/s bandwidth each). I currently have the small infinity fabric (IF) jumpers on them (connects the two GPUs inside each module) but don't have the IF bridge to connect the two modules together, though from what I'm reading I might want to skip the IF link stuff all together as support for it is spotty.

I'm looking for advice on the following:

  • What OS would be best? I've seen several people recommend Ubuntu Server or RHEL. I would also be fine with running Windows 10/11. Am more concerned with what will be easier to live with and stable. From what I understand, MacOS is not really an option for this on an Intel-based machine if I want to use the GPUs.
  • What stack/models and parameter size(s) would you recommend that would be well suited to my spec. I have a lot of VRAM so I believe I should be able to run a fairly large model. AFAIK CPU and RAM aren't as relevant, but I could have a 12 or 16 core Xeon W and up to 192GB of 6-channel DDR4 ECC RAM.
    • My primary use cases are research, text analysis, document generation, not so much image/video generation.
    • I would like to at least poke around and "vibe coding". I have no coding background whatsoever. This is more a curiosity than anything else.
  • I am considering purchasing a second W6800X to use two of those instead of the 2x Vega II Duos. That would be half the VRAM (64GB total) and lower memory bandwidth, but a newer architecture and perhaps better support (and half the power consumption). Would that be a better route to take hardware wise?

Hey everyone, I have a single 8GB stick of OEM Micron DDR4 that causes my Mac Pro to not boot. I've tried it in a couple different slots/configurations (4 sticks, 6 sticks, etc) but haven't tried it as a single stick or in a pair yet. When attempting to boot I get the blinking amber LED for memory failure.

Is there anything else I can do to troubleshoot that stick? Or is it just toast if the computer won't boot with it? It looks perfect physically but was DOA when I received it. I know you can check the memory status in the system information, but my computer doesn't boot with that stick installed, so that seems kind of pointless.

My 2019 Mac Pro currently has the following PCIe devices installed:

  • Slot 1/2: W6800X
  • Slot 3: RX 6900 XT
  • Slot 4: Empty
  • Slot 5: Afterburner
  • Slot 6: OWC Accelsior with 4 NVME drives
  • Slot 7: Empty
  • Slot 8: Apple I/O card

The Expansion Slot Utility was previously showing me 100% allocation of both pools. However; I recently opened the machine up to test fit a third GPU, but removed that GPU and left the configuration as it was previously (no new devices, though it's possible the OWC card got moved). Now, I'm getting 100% of Pool A (Afterburner) and 125% of Pool B (Apple I/O and OWC Accelsior). Does anyone know why the allocation went up? I'm sure it's not a huge issue but it's a little puzzling to me. I tried moving the OWC card from 7 to 6 where it sits now, but that made no difference. Afterburner is supposed to be installed in Slot 3, 4, or 5, so that can't be moved.

W6800X vs Vega II 32GB

I know these are both older GPUs at this point and that the W6800X generally outperforms the Vega II, but I'm wondering if there are any use cases where a Vega II is better (maybe due to the higher memory bandwidth?)

I ended up with both of these GPUs and am planning to keep one alongside my RX 6900 XT.
