Found my perfect car. Super rare colour. Full factory aero kit. Full carbon interior, Center console, wheel, door bins & handle, handbrake etc etc. fabulous history and paperwork. Even has the factory phone which is awesome for me. Getting a full inspection just to be sure. To go with my Cayenne and 981 Boxster. Happy days.
Doing the spark plugs on the 996 and was wondering if It’s true that I had to take off the dead end plus exhaust, or if I can just remove the wheel and wheel well? I’ve seen a couple videos on it and they remove the exhaust and tear end. It seems excessive but I wanted to come here and ask before I do anything
The cab roof warning light popped up, I stupidly removed the hardtop and proceed to close the top. Yeah it’s done the whole song and dance except it won’t go any further than this. It’s all but 2” from latching. It won’t bloody close either…
I also picked the worst day to play around with it, as it started pouring half way through this.
The same car has a faulty ABS/PSM where the light no longer pops up in the dash. Ugh. I hope the incoming turbo will be a little more gentle to my wallet than this cabriolet.

I have not been able to use the soft top for at least 2 years. My indie mechanic told me it needs new “latch assembly” which has an updated part number of 997 561 117 02.
I saw some things on Renlist about being able to get the latch assembly motor working with a pencil pushing on the microcontroller. Is anyone here knowledgeable about that and thoughts on how to tell if this my issue (and potential resolution)?
The soft top had failed one day due to hydraulics (since rebuilt) and I had to hand crank it down to get hard top back on. It was during this or the fix that the latch part broke.
When I turn on the car with hardtop fully latched, I get an error light I must dismiss for soft top not fully latched (or something like that) even though it is down and in back.
Would love to use my convertible this summer for less than the $800-1200 for replacement latch assembly.
For the red… white and BLUE
Happy 250th birthday America. God bless

*Sorry for the ai slot but didn’t want to show my messy garage
Because the light hit right as I was drying her post car wash.
Get up, drink an espresso, get ready, and start the day.
I’m thinking yes, but not sanding, they are clear with no hazing. I was thinking compound polish and then some UV protective wrap film instead of spraying them with a clear coat.
From what I’ve seen online this is the best option.
Changed starter, Y cable and battery after slow crank and no start. Starts just fine now except:
- intermittent battery/generator warnings on dash despite normal voltage on dash. Just under 14 after start with slightly less after a bit of driving.
- frunk unlocks when unlocking car with key and also while driving seeming randomly.
I am looking at upgrading my 28 year old suspension (1998 C2) as it's never been done.
Looking at B8s with H&R Sport lowering springs. Does anyone have pictures of this set up they can post please? Im very particular and want to make sure the ride hight works for me visually.
Thanks

Long term fan of the C4S, now a few months into ownership.
After watching the market and thinking "If I don't do this now, I'm going to pay a whole lot more later." I pulled the trigger on a 2004 GT3 with some mods (RUF Bumper/side skirts, Numeric shifter, and Guard LSD). This was a photo I took after my first drive ever in a GT3 after purchasing the car from the previous owner, we went up on Highway 9 for some fun driving. I was following my friend in his awesome 997.1 GT3.
What I appreciate about this first photo now is that after parking and immediately taking this picture, I went to fill up and had no idea where the gas cap was hahaha. My buddy pointed it out, so I had to get back in and put it in reverse to get the car in position to fill it up. *face palm*
After that I drove it from the Bay Area to SoCal taking the 101 the whole way and it was just such a pleasant drive getting to know the car. I have been surprised to see how much love this car gets too. Tons of thumbs ups and people taking photos, glad it makes other happy too.
I've had some amazing cars over the years. '98 Z28 1LE, 91 NSX Comptech supercharged, 06 M3 Competition Coupe, 04 Gallardo (6 spd gated), and currently an 05 F430 being converted to a gated car... so for comparison sake that's what I'm going off of. This 996 is special!!! The steering on this might be the best I've ever experienced. And the sound this makes as it begins to really start pulling from 5k to 8k RPM is pretty incredible. I regret years ago not listening to a maintenance shop owner in 2018 telling me as I was shopping for a Ferrari 360 or Gallardo, "Have you ever considered a GT3? They're the best driving experience + ownership experience you can have. You just put gas and oil in it, take it to the track and drive it home." At the time I was dead set on an Italian sports car which is also great. But, had I listened to him I also might not appreciate this car as much as I do now. It's got 51k miles on it, and my intent buying a drivers example is to one day be someone that can say "Oh it has 200k miles on it." I've already put over 600 miles on it since Saturday!
What a car, and I'm so happy to be a part of the "weird" Porsche club. I have ALWAYS loved how the 996 looked despite what the herd said about the headlights. Looking forward to being part of this community, hoping all of you went out and drove yours today too!
Going to test drive this cracking 996.1 3.4 in Champagne with Full interior carbon spec and factory Aero kit to go with my Cayenne and 981. Old school cool. Can’t wait.
Quick background: bought this car recently coming from BMW land and was geeking out with a Durametric kit trying to understand what baseline looks like on a 996. That's actually how I discovered the issue - the car ran fine when I bought it and the previous owner drove it hard with no complaints. Bank 1 was reading -11.48° at idle, Bank 2 was fine at -4.14°. I only flagged it because I knew the spec was ±6°.
Took it to a shop who retimed the engine in-car, had it for a month, said the timing held, and returned it. Drove it home and it jumped again. Now reading Bank 1 at -10.9° and Bank 2 at +7.7° - both banks out of spec and in opposite directions.
When the shop did the retime they pulled the oil pan and inspected for plastic and metal debris. Found nothing. Does that meaningfully change the damage assessment, or is debris absence not a reliable indicator at this stage?
Shop is recommending a full engine rebuild at $30k. Before I commit to that:
Assuming a borescope through the plug holes is the standard first step before anyone opens the engine - is that right or is there a better way to assess damage scope before committing?
