The Luck and the Light — comic fantasy with a Pratchett/Le Guin flavour, first in a series**

Hello . I'm a first-time author and my debut novel is free on Kindle for the next five days. I thought I'd be upfront about that rather than pretend I'm not here to get it into hands.

The short version: \\\*The Luck and the Light\\\* is a fantasy set in a world called Agios. A thirteen-year-old boy named Klem picks up a green crystal that seems to make things go right — not in a showy, explosive way, but in the way that a bridge holds until you're across it and then doesn't. He ends up mixed up with an invasion, a dragon, a telepathic marsh creature, and an immortal called Deller who arrived from somewhere else entirely and has opinions about everything.

The tone sits somewhere between Pratchett and Le Guin — comic realism, dry understatement, characters who are wry about things they probably shouldn't survive. It's written for readers who enjoy humour that earns its warmth rather than announcing it.

The Luck And The Light

Klem and Todd are nearly fourteen when the Mangorian army destroys everything they know. Alone in an ancient forest, they're found by the Yukoya — luminous, mouthless beings who sleep inside trees — and given a task that seems impossible: retrieve a green crystal from beneath a dragon's egg on a mountain nobody can see.

With an unpredictable wizard, a silver marsh-dribbler called Dorky, and a hooded Yukoya seeing the world for the first time, they travel underground through a golden city, sail into a sea vortex in a turtle shell, and face a Sisterhood who have caged the dragon they claim to worship.

Separated from their families and alone in an ancient forest, they are found by the Yukoya — luminous, mouthless beings who sleep inside trees — and given a task that seems impossible: retrieve a green crystal from beneath a dragon's egg on a mountain nobody can see.

With an unpredictable wizard, a silver marsh-dribbler called Dorky, and a hooded Yukoya venturing into the world for the first time, they travel underground through a golden city, sail into a sea vortex in a turtle shell, and face a Sisterhood who have caged the very dragon they claim to worship.

Above it all, two ancient beings watch from comfortable chairs and try very hard not to interfere.

The luck is real. The light is earned. And the fate of a city under siege depends on two boys from the fens who were never supposed to be heroes.
