Replaced shower faucet but there’s a gap

I replaced the shower faucet/diverter with a new updated one from moen. The previous one also had a gap that seemed to be sealed with a clear silicone. How do I fix this gap? Do I still need to apply silicone? I feel like I can’t tighten it anymore

Edit: yes I know the tub needs the be redone lol it’s next on the list. This is just how we bought it 😅

It’s an old kitchen- from the 70’s. Kitchen space measures 9x11. The fridge side borders a hallway. The current plan is to remove the small counter peninsula from next to the fridge to pull the fridge out and give space between the fridge and stove. Then also remove the ceiling cabinets that border the dining space to open it up. May also consider getting rid of the peninsula and adding an island. Will this make it too cramped with appliances?
