Is a Swiss (public) school education good?

I see that Switzerland ranks high in PISA scores (far, far higher than neighbouring Germany and France). I would also expect there to be a good start for Swiss children in terms of language learning, being exposed to a Teutonic and Romantic language AND probably being taught English (with English all around because of internet and various cultural factors).

Do people agree that a Swiss school sets up a child well in life in terms of learning? Or are there disadvantages which I might not see? If you studied in a Swiss school in the state education system, do you see that it has given benefits? Or what changes/tweaks would you make to make it better?

Think up your own ABBA "alternative universe"

I thought it might be fun to imagine a parallel universe in which real ABBA history possibly followed a different path. What would be yours? Here's mine.

In 1982, the boys do a deal with the girls that they will NOT release their solo albums if they agree to stay with the group in return for an increased role. So ABBA disappear completely in 1982 and 1983 and then, when everyone has completely forgotten about them, return as a reinvented rock group with a much harder image. Their lead single is “I Know There’s Something Going On” (really ABBA with Phil Collins), followed by Agnetha-written “I Won’t Let You Go” (with words by Bjorn?). Can you imagine everyone’s jaws dropping?

This is what their album entitled “1984” would be (the name would slightly continue the theme of “The Visitors” and totalitarianism):

I Know There’s Something Going On

I Won’t Let You Go

One Night in Bangkok

Head Over Heels (held over from “The Visitors” where it was replaced by “Should I Laugh Or Cry”)

I Know Him So Well

Just Like That

Under Attack (cold ending and sound more like in the demo version)

I Am The City

Cassandra

The Day Before You Came

After that they go silent again for a while, but then release DJUPE ANDETAG or a similar brilliant Swedish-language contemporary adult album in the early 1990s. I like to think that ABBA has so much creative imagination that they would be able to re-invent themselves in so many different ways.

Do you work or have you ever worked for Deutsche Bahn?

I have always thought that working for a railway company looks exciting and even a bit "romantic", especially in a country which has a wide rail network. On the other hand, I can imagine that a customer-facing role is pretty stressful, especially with what we know about DB's punctuality and other issues.

Has anyone here ever worked for DB, especially on long journeys that crossed the entire country? I would love to hear your experiences and if you enjoyed the role and any benefits it brought you.

Thanks in advance for your contributions!

Where would you like to live in Switzerland?

Assuming that you live and work in Switzerland... if you had the opportunity and the funds to escape the daily grind, where would you go to live? However, the choice has to be somewhere inside Switzerland.

It could be a nice place where you would like to retire (and not work), it could be a nice house/settlement that you see from the train when commuting, it might be a dream which does not really exist (eg. working in a well-paid job but not necessarily in the centre of Zurich).

I am interested if there is any general consensus on how people answer or if it throws up some quirk answers. Would you switch cantons for economic reasons, would you buy a big and new or a small and old property, would you go for pleasant surroundings or a bit closer to the action and the cities?
