old clock maintenance?

I asked about this ~1887 clock a few weeks ago. Turns out it does actually run pretty well and I think with patience I could adjust the pendulum to get it to run a little more accurately.

According to my dad, it hasn't been run for 60 years (but that might be an understatement).

Before I put it into service, does this type of clock need maintenance beyond winding? Like lubrication? If so, is that something one has done professionally or is it a DIY-type thing?

Thanks!

Smallest LTE smartwatch for a senior lady?

Looking for a watch for my senior mom who is bad about carrying a phone but good about wearing a watch. She wears a traditional analog watch but I really want to get her a smartwatch so next time she falls over on the back 40 she can call someone to pick her up. 😬

So what's the slimmest, daintiest standalone watch? The only needed features are time, date, and phone calls.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Is this type of clock worth servicing?

I've been given this older clock. It hasn't been used in a long time and I assume it doesn't work--I tried using the key but it didn't budge. (I didn't try very hard--I don't know how these things work and didn't want to damage it.)

It doesn't appear to be overly rusty or corroded. Is this worth getting looked at or is it probably beyond salvaging? And if it was running, would it be any good?

Thanks!

Mood "Rosalie" hangs weird. Looking for suggestions.

rosalie--mood sewsciety

I've been making this one from Mood (https://blog.moodfabrics.com/the-rosalie-shirt-dress-free-sewing-pattern/) and I have an issue with how it hangs. The outer seam of the skirt folds in on itself starting with the inseam pocket. I washed it to see if that helped. It didn't.

Is the shape of the skirt here the problem? That side seam is very pointy looking at the blue "modeled" version. That's a weird way to construct an A-line skirt isn't it? The skirt wants to hang straight and not poke out the side.

Perhaps the pocket construction is making it collapse on itself or something. Or is this because the fabric is fairly lightweight and the seam is too heavy?

Is it possible that the front is too wide? I did a significant FBA on it. I wanted to put some contour darts at the waist to reduce some of the bulk there (although maybe not needed since it's belted?).

I'm considering shaving the sides down and losing the pockets and that 8" of fabric that hides itself on each side. Or let it hang like I have a giant inverted pleat on each side. 😛

this doesn't photograph well--giant inverted pleat from top of pocket to the bottom of skirt.

I don't know if this is going to be wearable anyway--the fabric reads MATTRESS and was a poor choice (I think the weight, etc. is fine) . 😄 I'm not going to bother with buttons if it won't hang right! But it is educational!

Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Bamboo ID request

Hi, I planted this stuff 15 years ago. I know it was labeled a clumping species and it has certainly remained clumped, but I don't know if it was labeled correctly (and I don't remember what it was anyway...) :)

Fresh culms are green and waxy, aging to yellow. No grooves. New culms are about 15ft high and 1.5" diameter. USDA zone 10

Turns out my photos aren't very good--it was windy. Is there anything I should photograph that helps identify? Thanks!

hem style for slinky knit?

I need to hem a dress in a slinky polyester/spandex knit. Can I just do a turned hem like I would with a respectable fabric? Should I attempt a rolled hem?

(I don't want to mess with a twin needle and I think it would look better with one line of crooked stitching instead of two. : ) The skirt is wide enough to not need the stretch.)

Thanks!
