Looking to hire a local SEO expert — what should they actually be doing?

I'm looking to hire someone to help improve our local SEO. I've tried finding people on Upwork, but most of the responses I've received seem to focus almost entirely on managing our Google Business Profile by responding to reviews.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I assume there's a lot more to local SEO than just responding to reviews. Is that actually a significant part of the work, or am I talking to the wrong people?

Our website is about two years old, and we have 60+ genuine 5-star reviews from real clients with no negative reviews. Despite that, I'm seeing competitors with significantly fewer reviews consistently ranking in the top 10 of the local pack, while I can barely find our firm in the local results.

Interestingly, we're now ranking organically in the top 10 for several relevant search terms, so our website seems to be gaining traction. But local rankings are particularly important in our industry, and that's where we're struggling.

For those who know local SEO, what would you look at beyond reviews/Google Business Profile management? And what should I realistically expect a good local SEO expert to be doing each month?

I'm trying to find someone who can actually diagnose the problem and improve our local visibility, rather than just respond to reviews.

Total review count dropped by 8, but all the actual text reviews are still physically there when I count them?

Hey everyone, running into a bizarre issue with my Google Business Profile (GMB) and wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this lately.

Two days ago, my review count suddenly dropped from 55 down to 47. Naturally, I panicked thinking I got hit by the spam filter.

However, when I actually open my profile and physically scroll down to count the text reviews, all 55 reviews are still completely there…Every single one of them is visible. It’s just the aggregate number at the top that dropped to 47 and won't budge.

For context, right before this happened, a vendor left me a review and I left him one back (it happened to be his profile's very first review). I’m wondering if that reciprocal review triggered some weird algorithmic glitch or flagged a temporary hold, causing the backend database and the front-facing counter to fall out of sync.

Has anyone seen this "mismatched count" bug before? Does it usually resolve itself/sync back up on its own, or am I going to have to open a support ticket to force a metadata refresh?

Appreciate any insight!
