What should good dept leaders do to address a toxic department culture?

A lot of folks vent here about toxic colleagues or a toxic department culture but I don't often see any ideas on how the department leaders would address it. What are your thoughts? That is, if you were the one in charge, what would you do?

Research on student use of slides?

Is there any research out there about the benefits or disadvantages to student learning of giving students lecture slides before class?

I use slides very sparingly in class but students still want them and balk if they aren't provided. I hate giving them slides in advance because I think they pay less attention in class because they have the slides. I also feel like it prevents them from engaging with the material and information in the same way they would if they had to take their own notes- deciding what info to include/exclude, etc.

But those are just my feelings/perceptions. I would love to have some evidence to back this up. Does anyone know of any research out there?

A small request...

I love looking at everyone's creative builds and I understand that nighttime really highlights the warm glow of lights, but could y'all please include daytime pics, too? I can't make out 1/2 the stuff in your camp because it's too darn dark! If you really want to show it off, daytime is your friend!

Captions changing dialect to SAE

I always have closed captions on when watching TV due to a mild hearing loss. I've noticed that when someone is speaking a dialect, the captions invariably don't reflect the dialect; instead, they change the words to fit Standard American English dialect.

For example, a character using the Southern American dialect said: "I don't know nothing about that." But the captions said: "I don't know anything about that."

That's one example, but there are many more. Something about that doesn't sit right with me. What are your thoughts?

My dad just died and I don't know what to do about Father's Day

I'm already seeing ads for Father's Day sales. The local store has cards out. I see these things and in my head all I hear is "My dad is dead" over and over. Sometimes I worry I might actually say it out loud...or yell it.

Ideas for surveying students where the responses are anonymous but I can see which students responded

Stay with me...

I want to start incorporating anonymous mid semester surveys in my classes to get student feedback. I also want to incentivise students to complete the survey but I can't seem to find a good tool for this. Basically, I don't want to know the individual student responses, but I want to be able to see which students completed the survey generally.

Our LMS has a survey tool - while it allows responses to not be tied to student names, there's no way to see which students did/did not complete it. Same with Google forms- it's either 100% anonymous or ties the response to the name of the responder.

Is there some other tool out there I'm not aware of?
