Prairie Dog Hunting
Saw this fellow off the Greenbelt Plateau trail this morning. It was on the ground stalking parties dogs , attempting to use grass and mounds for cover. The prairie dogs spotted it and it eventually gave up. They were much more alarmed by it than the large dog I was walking with. My son thinks it is likely a Cooper's Hawk based on its behavior. Apologies for the potato photo but it was very cool to watch.
Yard defense - to the barricades!
We've recently had a bobcat visiting our neighbors yards and in my boy,'s defense he is in a state of elevated alert. About ten minutes ago he was sound asleep next to my wife who also had our cat Moose asleep in her lap. My wife quit rubbing the cat who woke up and protested angrily about the situation. The dog rushed out of the room and through his dog door ( sounds like a V8 ) to defend the yard and the cat. The cat was two feet away...
Right now he's out back, not sure what he should be barking at so he's laying down suppressive fire in various directions.
A couple of morning photos -
That line on the lake is the typical 'high-tide' level but you can see the effect the drought is having. That line is composed entirely of feathers.
He's been watching leopard ambush videos apparently
My boy sitting and waiting patiently
Goodbye for now?
I've been doing occasional updates of the bobcat family living behind us but it appears they have moved on. We haven't seen them for a few days, and more definitively, my dog isn't doing a fence patrol lately. So far as we know everyone is happy and healthy but the kittens are getting big and perhaps mom shifted hunting grounds. If they return I'll post more pics of the family.
Heading home...
My wife got this today so thank her :-). It's a hot day and the kittens were all in the neighbor's yard ( they have a pond ) when mom said it was time to head home. They are getting quite large and this has a good view of the largest kitten. The are all quite coordinated, great lapers and there is definitely an accepted path home
Mother bobcat showing me her sullen teenager side
I happened to glance out of my back window around 11:30 and found the mother bobcat heading across my yard. We have a large, territorial dog and I have been trying to discourage her or the kittens from attempting out yard so I went out and hazed her - "No mama, you can't come in here, scoot" was admittedly not very strident but she did turn around and go back the way she came in. Ths was the look she gave me before she left
Tiny is learning to hunt.
My wife got this one. He/she is stalking a squirrel from my fence . Dramatic hunting tail twitch. The mother is watching from about 75 ft away. You have to let the kids learn to go down the big sliding board by themselves
Lazy Sunday.
It's 7:00 and still 92 outside. A bit of a sleepy, low energy day going on here in Colorado.
One of the bobcat kittens trying to check out me and my dog but the pup spotted him right away
Trying again - morning birds and bobcat kitten
Pictures didn't make it on my first attempt. The lake walk crowd - geese and heron welcoming the day, then the heron decides it doesn't like my company. Finally the eagle viewing area. Definitely an adult bald eagle on the left but I'm not sure what the other two raptors are. I added a bonus bob cat kitten.
The kittens are learning to hunt
My wife got this today. She saw this little guy or gal trotting across the yard with this unfortunate squirrel.
My mix on morn guard duty
On the morning of the 4th of July he began to alert at the fence. It turns out that a family of bobcats has moved into the yard behind us. You can see Mom on the corner of the railing in the second picture. We have reached a level of guarding the backyard that I didn't know existed...
