Plumber quoted this for softener installed

How does this pricing look as far as the material, I am aware of the regulator being replaced. Labor is $1k but they initially told me material is sub $500 then I get an email that’s double, email before this was $1620

987.1 S owners, how often are you guys doing oil changes?

I have a 2008 with about 114,600 miles. I did my last oil change almost exactly a year ago at 111,291, so I’ve only driven about 3,300 miles since.

I added 1/4 qt at 114,276 the oil was showing low

Now only like 300 miles later it’s showing low again and flashing at the bottom.

Is this pretty normal for these cars? How much oil are you guys usually adding between oil changes? I think I’m just going to do a full oil change soon.

What type/brand of salt should I use for my new Fleck 5600SXT softener?

I just ordered a 48K Fleck 5600SXT water softener with 1.5 cu. ft. of 10% crosslink resin. I’m on city water and my hardness is around 18 GPG.

I’m trying to figure out what salt I should use long term. The seller recommends Dura-Cube, or solar salt if Dura-Cube isn’t available, but I’m curious what everyone here actually uses.

Would you recommend Dura-Cube, Morton, Diamond Crystal, solar crystals, pellets, or something else?

I’m mainly looking for something that works well, minimizes salt bridging/mushing, and doesn’t require unnecessary maintenance. Price isn’t a huge concern if one type is genuinely better.

What would you use with this setup? Thanks :)

Water Softener Recommendations

I'm looking to install a salt-based water softener and trying to figure out what system/size I should actually buy.

House is about 2,950 sq ft with 4 bathrooms, but only 3 people live here. In SoCal

The city's most recent water report shows:

Hardness: 17 GPG average

Range: 16–19 GPG

Hardness: 293 ppm average

pH: 7.6

Alkalinity: 119 ppm

I tested my water myself with an Amazon test strip and got closer to 25 GPG / 425 ppm, but I'm assuming the strip isn't very accurate or I didn't accurately measure. I have someone coming tomorrow to professionally test the water at my house so I'll have an actual hardness reading.

Our total water usage last month was 17 units / 12,716 gallons, but a decent amount of that is irrigation. The irrigation will NOT be going through the softener.

I'm pretty set on going with a traditional salt-based system at this point. My main goals are reducing scale, protecting my tankless water heater/plumbing/appliances, and obviously getting actually softened water throughout the house.

What system would you guys recommend?

I've been looking at 1.5 cu ft / 48,000 grain systems and have seen Fleck and Clack recommended a lot. Should I be looking for a Clack WS1, Fleck 5600SXT/5800, something else?

Would 1.5 cu ft / 48K be the right size for 3 people and 4 bathrooms, or should I go with a 2.0 cu ft / 64K system?

Also, are there any specific brands/resin types I should be looking for or avoiding?

Getting the actual hardness tested tomorrow, so I can update the post once I have that number.

Thank you guys!

Thought I wanted a salt-free system, now I’m not so sure. Help!

I tested my water with one of those Amazon test kits and it came back at around 425 ppm hardness (roughly 25 GPG). It also showed alkalinity around 250 ppm with a pH of about 9. Everything else looked pretty good.
Originally I was looking at salt-free systems because I don’t have a lot of room where my main water line comes into the garage, and I was trying to avoid having to fit a traditional softener and brine tank

The more I’ve been reading though, the more it sounds like salt-free systems may not be enough for water that’s this hard..

For those of you with really hard water:
Did you end up going with a traditional salt-based softener?
Has anyone with water around 25 GPG had good long-term results with a salt-free system?

Does the high alkalinity/pH change what type of system I should be looking at, or is the hardness really the main thing that matters?
If you switched from salt-free to salt-based, was it worth it?
Just looking for advice from people who’ve actually dealt with this before. Thanks!

987.1 S borescope inspection — are these normal cylinder wall marks or scoring?

Doing a borescope inspection on my 987.1 Cayman S (M97) at around 111k miles and found these faint vertical lines in cylinder 4. My mechanic told me those are normal Alusil/ring contact marks but I wanted to ask here & make sure. Cyl 5/6 looked clean and this is the last one we checked 😄. Thanks!

987.1 S Exhaust Systems

Hello all!

Really tempted to add some volume to my car. I don’t want anything stupid loud, might even do just a new muffler but I can’t find many good quality vids of some setups. Anyone got any recommendations / videos to share?

Weird Warm Start

Hi guys, this was after driving it for about 10 minutes. I’ve always known about this. It only starts up weird when it’s warm not cold. I’m thinking possibly injectors? I got 120k on the odo. Recently did a whole work up on the car, including spark plugs, oil change, etc, however injectors, or coils are the only things that I did not do.

Anybody ever seen issues with the evaporator purge valve?

Hello all. I recently had the roof repainted and the painter screwed up the roof rack covers. I can’t figure out how the tiny painted black piece goes in. There’s a little grooves on the side, so it doesn’t just snap in while the entire gasket is installed. I can’t find a YouTube guys either so if anybody has an idea help would be really appreciated.
