Astera tube alternative?

I was wondering if there were any recommendations for Astera tube alternatives. I don’t really need the wireless or battery powered part and I was hoping there was a cheaper alternative but still looked good without the fancy features.

Do microphone grills affect the frequency response of the mic?

I was just wondering if technically that is happening with every microphone. You have a hard mesh covering that technically is blocking part of the frequencies. Anyone have any thoughts? It’s probably negligible but it’s interesting to think about.

Best way to learn time code to integrate into lighting?

Not sure where else to ask this question so I thought I’d ask here. I’m currently using Obsidian Onyx. Couldn’t find much online. This community is a lot smaller than the audio community lol.

I’m not a Boris fan, but how did he figure post-processing all those years ago?

Seems like he’s a bit of an ass but how did he figure out ENB all those years ago.

Understanding alien languages

Haven’t played these games in a while but they’ll live rent free in my head forever. Anyways, I was thinking about how in the first game, when you first meet Carth, he says it’s pretty remarkable how many alien languages you know for a raw recruit. Later, when on Kashyyyk, you tell the czerka employee you don’t need a translator because you’ve been trained in the ways of the force. Then, in KOTOR 2, the HK-50 sonic imprint sensor you find on Peragus serves as your translator for the whole game. The game doesn’t really ever mention that again till HK-47 asks you about it. Anyways, I was just thinking if Revan learned all those languages because of effort or because of the force. I do know he used the force to learn the Rakatan language and teach them basic.

Why don’t more venues have low-end treatment?

Is it just me or do venues never have enough low-end treatment. Even in large venues like churches, they just have giant panels everywhere that are only 2in thick. I don’t understand, like the low-end doesn’t just go away if the room is bigger. What’s the point of having a million dollar sound system if the room isn’t treated probably. Even 4in treatment is only effective down to like 125hz. You need like 11in or 12in treatment to absorb 30hz and I’ve never seen that in any venue ever.

What actually is waveshaping?

I’m trying to understand the Oxford Inflator and apparently it’s a waveshaper, not a limiter or clipper. I don’t understand how it doesn’t affect dynamic range if it chops off the top and bottom of a signal. Isn’t that considering clipping in a sense? I understand that it adds harmonics but the idea of shaping the wave into a sinusoidal form is confusing to me. It just seems like a clipper and distortion put together. Can someone explain how it actually works? It makes me feel like I’m losing dynamic range, even though the manual says it doesn’t change that.

Science question: how does the proximity effect actually work?

I was thinking about acoustic treatment and how the thicker you get, the lower frequency you absorb. Most thinner treatment will advertise itself as for “critical speech” applications. It got me thinking though….. Doesn’t low frequency travel further/longer/farther? Wouldn’t you want all frequencies absorbed for speech applications?

It also got me thinking about microphones. Shouldn’t mics get lower frequencies at further distances since high frequencies don’t go as far? I know that’s obviously true with speakers, but it seems to be the opposite with microphones. Anyone want to fill me in on what the science is behind this?

What’s the difference between a resonance suppressor and dynamic EQ?

I saw that Soothe 3 came out. I also saw the price tag. I’m wondering what makes it worth vs a dynamic eq like pro-q 4.

Looking for mods that nerf follower damage.

I like to have a bunch of followers because I like the dialogue and interaction. Unfortunately, once I give them good weapons and armour, we start mowing people down. I’m looking for mods that would simply nerf their damage output and maybe even let them take more damage. I don’t want to turn up the difficulty because I don’t want friendly NPCs in quest or cities to get annihilated by enemies.

Tried the new de-feedback plugin.

It’s insane. Works great. Instantly bought it after demoing it lol. I have a Livebox MADI and I can easily throw a few instances on there. I didn’t realize till I used it, that the plugin itself has zero latency. Thats absolutely bonkers to me, I have no idea how they do it. So easy to use. Just download it and throw it in your VST3 folder and it loads into SuperRack Performer when you scan for plugins.

EDIT: So I measured it with SMAART for anyone curious about latency. At 0% and 50% it was literally 0.00 ms of latency but at 100% it reported 0.02ms of latency.

I started with a fresh Digico session on a SD10. I got a roundtrip latency of 1.88ms at 48K. Normally, once you edit the session, it changes to 1.90ms of latency. (Side-note if you didn’t know, the SD stuff has different latency depending on whether it’s an insert, output, group, or aux.) SuperRack Soundgrid had a roundtrip latency of 1.02ms. The MADI Livebox had a roundtrip latency of 2.27ms latency. The plugin itself is 0ms. So technically if you were to include the console and Livebox together, it would be 4.15ms of latency but that’s subject to change based on how you’re sending the channel whether via group or aux. This number would of course be lower at 96K.

Up to what frequency do you find phase alignment relevant?

Just thinking about crowd mic alignment. Do you guys worry about phase when it comes to that kind of stuff, or do you HPF the mics enough to where it doesn’t matter. I know with drums it becomes obvious in the low-end when it comes to phase alignment, but what stuff like choirs and crowds?

I was looking to try it out but it’s still $150 everywhere. That seems crazy to me for an old, simple plugin.

Update: I ended up getting a $80 bundle from Plugin Boutique that includes the Oxford Limiter, Inflator, and dynamic EQ plugins.

I know this more of an acoustic builder question. But I’m wondering if anyone has experience taking off drywall and putting the insulation straight between studs and covering with fabric vs just putting acoustic panels on the wall. Only thing I would be concerned with is fire-code.

I have some stuff already like decapitator and black box. I’m looking for something that emulates this pedal. Something that’s a fuzz basically. There’s basically no other pedal like it but I’m wondering if anyone has come across a good all-around fuzz plugin.
