How can I break out of the Help Desk and move toward Systems/Network Engineering?

I’ve been working in IT for about 5 years, primarily in Help Desk/Service Desk roles, and I’m trying to figure out the best way to make the jump into Systems Engineering or Network Engineering.

My background includes:

  • I currently work in healthcare IT supporting a hospital system, where I troubleshoot enterprise applications, identity/access issues, endpoints, networking/connectivity, and clinical applications such as Epic. (Service Desk Analyst I) Its been about 5 years now.
  • Former IT Asset Management Specialist and Support Technician for about a year at a local school district
  • About 10 months of Field Technician experience with CompuCom
  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in information technology through Purdue Online, I complete my degree courses in January of 2027.
  • Planning to pursue both vendor-specific and vendor-neutral certifications ( CCNA, AZ-104: Azure Administrator Associate etc.)

Outside of work, I’ve been building out my technical skills through labs and hands-on projects. I’ve worked with virtual machines, networking, VPNs, WAN concepts, and various open-source tools. I also built out a small home lab and configured an entire domain environment for my house so I could practice Active Directory, networking, and systems administration.

My long-term goal is to get into Systems Engineering and possibly Network Engineering, but I’m trying to figure out what my next realistic role should be.

For those who made the jump out of Help Desk, what helped you the most? Should I be targeting roles like Systems Administrator, Junior Systems Engineer, Network Administrator, NOC Engineer, Desktop Engineer, or something else first?

I’d also appreciate recommendations on certifications, home lab projects. Thank you.

Found this on Cicero & Berenice

Found this on Cicero & Berenice. Gotta be someone local. A few years ago I remember seeing the Latin Eagles tag “ALst” around Addison & Lavergne. Not sure if they were trying to claim that block or just tagging, because from what I remember at the time the 4s from ACst claimed that whole area.

Watching Gangland: Divide and Conquer… can anyone explain what they meant by the “Montrose” region?

I was watching the Gangland: Divide and Conquer episode on YouTube and paused at the map where they label one of the regions as “Montrose.”

No matter how closely I paid attention, I couldn’t figure out exactly what area they were referring to.

I’ve been looking into it and the only sets in the surrounding area:

Berwyn & Hoyne (Ravenswood)
Berwyn & Winthrop (Edgewater)
Winona & Winthrop (Edgewater)
Rosemont & Claremont (West Ridge)
Columbia & Ashland (Rogers Park)
Kedzie & Lawrence (Albany Park)
Montrose & Whipple (Albany Park/Irving Park area)
Keystone & Cullom (Irving Park)

Out of all of those, though, the only two that seem like they’re actually closest to Montrose Avenue are Montrose & Whipple and Keystone & Cullom.

Are those the sets that were recognized as the “Montrose” sets? Is that why the episode labeled the area as “Montrose”? That’s what threw me off. I wasn’t sure if they were referring to those specific sets or if “Montrose” was just a broader name for that whole North Side region that included parts of Albany Park, Irving Park, Uptown, Edgewater, Ravenswood, Rogers Park, and West Ridge.

Are these older Chicago Police POD cameras with the blue flashing lights still used today?

Are these older Chicago Police POD cameras still in use today?

I know the current-generation PODs are smaller and black, but I’m curious whether these older blue-and-white units are still active or if these older PODs have been completely replaced. Just curious if anyone knows whether any of these older PODs are still out there
