Update: Botched Emerald Battery Swap

Hey guys! You might have seen my post yesterday where I accidentally ripped out the copper pad that connects to the positive battery terminal for Pokemon Emerald. Whoops!

I was able to totally fix it and here are some progress pics. I ended up using some UV-curing solder mask to secure the pad, exposing R9, and the trace at the bottom left, and soldering the pad directly to those exposed traces.

In the process, I accidentally ripped out the trace to the bottom left, so I had to run a short patch wire from the copper pad to this pad, which I guessed (correctly) went to the trace I screwed up. And to my surprise it all worked! I masked over the whole thing and it’s currently curing in my DIY UV treatment box.

Help Request: Inverted Colors after Screen Swap AGS-001 -> AGS-101

What you're looking at here is my heavily modded AGS-001. I've gotten into modding this year, taught myself to solder, yada yada yada. This thing is a real ship of Theseus, the only thing that wasn't touched on it was the screen until...

Recently I did a custom GBA for one of my friends as a birthday present, and they sourced the motherboard from a local facebook marketplace deal (side note: they got a sick deal on it, $30 because they didn't know if it was working and didn't have a charger for it). Anyway, it turns out it was an AGS-101, so when I replaced that screen with an IPS, he let me keep the AGS-101.

I was planning on putting it into this puppy, but obviously when I powered it on it didn't work. I didn't realize that I couldn't just drop in an AGS-101 screen into this board.

So following some guides like this one, I found out that the issue was that the AGS-101 screen required a higher voltage, and many people like using 12V when doing mods like these. So I devised a plan:

  1. Cut the trace to pin 34 on the display connector
  2. Introduce a step-up converter (pictured) to the mix
  3. draw power from C1 on the power switch to the converter
  4. patch in 12V from the converter to pin 34 on the display connector

The result of all of that is pictured above. It seems like the colors are inverted. I've tried messing with the contrast potentiometer, which has had some effect on the contrast and saturation, but the colors are still inverted I think (not 100% sure how saturation, contrast work but I know the colors aren't right lol)

I've been using my multimeter to see if any of this went wrong, but as far as I can tell, I did everything as I intended to.

Has anyone seen this before? Is anyone aware of a fix?

Help Needed: Removed Copper Pad during Emerald Battery Swap

Not sure what went wrong, but today I was trying to swap out the battery in this Pokemon Emerald cart and the pad came off with the battery. Does anyone know how I can fix this or am I cooked? Thanks in advance!

Which video output do you guys prefer?

Hey guys! I recently fished my old DOL-001 out of my parents' basement and set it up on a CRT I got off Facebook Marketplace. I'm really happy with the look and setting up a little retro corner in my place.

I just now learned that there's a digital output option on here as well, which I'm assuming means there's a cable I can use to hook up the GameCube to a more modern HDTV. So which do you guys prefer? Component out + CRT, or Digital out + HDTV?

Hey everyone, I got in the Hispeedido V3 drop in today and was super excited to put it all together. Before full reassembling, I did a sanity check and just hooked up the new screen while giving the device power. Here’s the result. As you can see, half of the screen is dark and the other half doesn’t seem to be displaying the Game Boy logo. I reseated everything, even plugged it back into the original AGS-001 display to make sure the display was the problem (AGS-001 worked fine), plugged it all back in and got the exact same result.

I’m writing this before I file a claim with Hispeedido. Are there any quick fixes or sanity checks that I could be missing here?

Obviously the IPS replacement is one of the most popular mods out there, but damn! These kits are pricey! Which ones do you guys think are worth it, and are there any drawbacks to just getting a cheap one off AliExpress?

Got bit by the modding bug and started buying random old stuff lol.

The DS Lite was “no power”, but after a good cleaning it came to life no problem. Well, problem, because the DS cart reader didn’t work and the top screen had dead pixels. So I decided to make it a GBA macro! Managed to salvage a speaker from the top screen and made room for it by removing the stylus holder. I ended up breaking the digitizer cable but I guess that’s fine since it’s just for GBA games anyway lol.

The SP was fine but the shell was in rough shape, very scratched up and had a ton of old and yellowed (but still kinda cool) stickers all over it. Found this Pikachu shell for about $13 and boom! Like new.
