Questions about Posting for Common-Law Spouse

I’m a high school teacher in Ontario, and after over a decade, I finally became full time permanent, which I’ve been for the last 5 years. My common-law husband has just rejoined the military after retiring over 2 years ago (he starts in a few days). I’m nervous if he is posted anywhere because I know that it’s hard to transfer my permanent teaching position anywhere in Ontario let alone anywhere else in the country. Even within the same city, if I move school boards, I lose my seniority and start from the bottom again, which is supply teaching. I’ve worked too hard to get to get to where I am, and I don’t want to see my hard work be lost. Being certified as an Ontario teacher only allows me to teach in Ontario, and to be a certified teacher anywhere else costs quite a bit, and I don’t know if anything with my seniority in Ontario and my permanent position will mean anything anywhere else in Ontario or anywhere else in Canada.

If my common-law husband ends up needing to be posted anywhere in Canada, how does that affect me with my job? Does it make a difference being common-law versus married? Will I keep my seniority if I have to move cities or provinces if he gets posted? If I decide not to move with him (let’s say that his posting is only a year), how does that affect us with having 2 households? Am I missing any questions that maybe I didn’t ask about this? He was trying to look things up for me about this, but we couldn’t find anything. As a type-A personality, I want to get all of my information and understand how the process works. We’ve been together for 4.5 years, so I wasn’t there when he was originally in the military (over 24 years serving, and he was posted a few times during that time). He doesn’t think he’ll be posted at least for the next few years, but that’s not something he’ll know right now anyway.

As a common-law military spouse, how did you handle a similar situation? Do you have any advice as a teacher? Are there any online resources or contacts available for me and for us that we can find information out to prepare if this ends up happening at some point over the next few years?

Military Mess as Possible Venue

Hello everyone 😀 I’ve been engaged for about 3 weeks now, and we’re looking for an affordable venue. My fiancée suggested a military mess (he’s military), and I was wondering if anyone has had their wedding in a mess before and what your experiences were with your day or someone else’s wedding you attended, cost, ease of setting up and taking down, food/drinks, etc. Our main thing that we’re looking for in a venue is where we can have our ceremony and reception without needing to travel to a different location and that it’s not too expensive. Also, are there any messes in/around Ottawa that you would recommend? We haven’t picked a date yet and number of people because we’re still taking in being engaged ☺️, but we’re going to start planning things soon. That being said, I’m thinking, to be safe, finding a venue that can hold around 100ish people and maybe sometime fall 2028 would be good. We’re still flexible because no actual planning has started yet, but I wanted to know what experiences were like. Thanks in advance 😃
