My most recent rescue, a little Beagle Mama
Last summer, right before a huge thunderstorm, this little mama beagle showed up in the alley behind my house with 2 puppies in tow. No collars. The pups ran right up to me, but mama was so spooked that she ran off, and the puppies followed her. Then it absolutely downpoured, and I couldn't get them out of my head. I told my boyfriend about her, and he said to stop worrying... I still drove around the neighborhood looking for them for days.
Only when I had given up looking, exactly one week later, they showed up again.
My other rescue is not friendly to other dogs, so I sent her to stay with my parents for the weekend, while I got to work finding homes for these boy pups. I fittingly named them Shiloh and Scout. Unsurprisingly, their forever families were easy to find. But I couldn't let go of mama.
When I tried to soft introduce her to my dog
Honeybun, they were both immediately reactive so l was about to give up, when Mama yeeted herself over her baby gate, rolled onto her back underneath Honeybun, and showed her belly like, "listen sister, I am NOT here to fight you"
And that was it.
Now they sunbathe together, beg for pup cups together, wear matching sweaters, and have developed a very amicable sister rivalry. Mama has the longest ears, the biggest personality, and a beagle howl WAY too loud to be coming from her little sausage body. She has also claimed the kitchen windowsill as her spot, and spends half the day perched there waiting for her husband to return from war…(MY boyfriend, who won't even be gone that long). I do get plenty of cuddles and kisses, but I am undeniably the spare human. Yes you read that right, I rescued both of these girls and yet they are beyond obsessed with my boyfriend. But I wouldn't trade them for anything. There is nothing like a bond with a rescue.
Tell me about your rescue? Who is their person? What makes them quirky? What nicknames do they have? Does anyone else also sing original parodies of songs to their dogs? Because we definitely have a rendition of Party Rock called "party beagles in the house tonight". My scrappy beagle from the alley absolutely brought light into our family. What about yours?
