Scafell Pike Hike Experience

I finally did the Scafell Pike hike this Thursday and it was honestly amazing.

Being the Lake District I was expecting the weather to change quickly and it definitely did. It was drizzling on and off with occasional pockets of sunshine but what really stood out was the wind. The Met Office had forecast winds around 42 mph (roughly 66-67 km/h).
I was prepared to turn back if things got too rough but the wind was seriously strong. At the summit especially it made it hard to just stand around and take it in felt like you could get blown off your feet (not literally, but you get the idea).

Navigation on the descent was also trickier than expected. I’d read that it can get confusing up there and the fog really does amplify that massively.

Definitely recommend downloading OS Maps or AllTrails offline before going. Biggest takeaway for me was to never underestimate the Lake District even on “manageable” forecast days.

I’ve linked the route I followed as well. I chose not to do the circular route because I wanted to avoid Piers Gill which I’d heard can be a pretty tricky section.

Happy to answer any questions if anyone’s planning it.

Scafell Pike via Seathwaite questions

Hi all,

I’m planning to do Scafell Pike via the Seathwaite / Borrowdale route and just wanted to confirm a few details about the start as I’ve seen slightly different descriptions online.

I’ll be getting off the bus around Seathwaite farm camping area and I’m trying to understand:

  • Is Seathwaite Farm camping effectively the correct starting point for the standard Corridor Route ascent?
  • Roughly how far is it from the bus stop area to the actual footpath/trail start from Seathwaite Farm Camping?
  • Once you’re there is the route clearly signposted or is it easy to miss the correct direction at the start?
  • Any tips for first timers starting from this side?

Any advice is much appreciated !

TIA

Highlights from my 15-Day Chile Trip

I did a 15-day trip around Chile at the end of March and beginning of April this year visiting Atacama, Puerto Varas, Puerto Natales, and Santiago. Here are some of the highlights from the trip.

Chile has easily become one of my favourite countries I’ve visited, and it’s definitely somewhere I’d love to return to. What stood out most was how warm and welcoming Chileans were. Despite the language barriers I occasionally faced, people were always willing to help and went out of their way to make things easier.

Happy to answer any questions.

Panorama + Four Mile Loop via Mist Trail - Trip report - 31/05/2026

I did the Panorama / Four Mile Loop via Mist Trail yesterday after months of planning and it was absolutely amazing.

I was originally planning to do Clouds Rest
but based on recent AllTrails reviews mentioning icy conditions near the top, I decided to switch plans. I’m not an experienced hiker and haven’t hiked in icy terrain before so I felt more comfortable sticking with this route instead.

For anyone looking to see Yosemite Valley’s most iconic viewpoints in a single hike, I’d highly recommend this one.

For context, I started from the Four Mile Trail and came down via the Mist Trail.

Here are some highlights from the hike.

Let me know in case you have any questions.

Edit : Certain sections of the four mile trail was busy yesterday with a handful of people talking quite loudly which took away a bit from the quiet experience I personally look for on hikes. I tend to prefer quieter trails which is one of the reasons I hike in the first place. That said once you get past Glacier Point the trail becomes much quieter and we had long stretches almost entirely to ourselves.

Passed My Theory Test -Tips That Helped Me

Hi everyone,

I just finished my theory test and wanted to share how I prepared for it before I forget, in case it helps anyone else who’s getting ready for theirs.

The first thing I did was book the exam before I even started studying. Having a fixed date really helped me stay committed and work towards a deadline.

I only started preparing about 3–4 weeks before the exam. I mainly used the “Theory 4 in 1” app, which I downloaded from the App Store for a few pounds (can’t remember the exact price).

I didn’t read the Highway Code because, honestly, it felt like too much reading and I’m not a big fan of reading long texts. Instead, I started with practice questions and then moved on to mock tests.

At first, I was scoring around 30–40 marks. Whenever I got questions wrong, I took screenshots and went through them later to understand my mistakes. I also used ChatGPT occasionally when I needed a topic explained in a simpler way.

For hazard perception, I used the same app to practise. Closer to the exam date, I was consistently scoring around 46–49 in mock tests.

In the actual exam, I passed with:
- 47/50 in the theory test
- 60/75 in hazard perception

For me, around 60–70% of the questions were almost identical to the ones in the app. The rest were new or slightly different from what I had practised.

My advise would be:
- Keep practising until you consistently score around 48–50 in mocks
- Watch YouTube videos explaining how hazard perception scoring works, as that really helps

Good luck to everyone preparing for their theory test, and feel free to give me a shout if you have any questions!

Clouds Rest hike early June

Hey everyone , I am planning to hike Clouds Rest during the first week of June and wanted to check a few things with anyone who has been there recently.

I’m sure people have probably asked the same questions before already so apologies for the repeated post.

-Is the trail currently open and accessible from the Tenaya Lake/Sunrise trailhead side? I know Tioga Road conditions can affect access and I’ve seen mixed information online. And the All trails apps shows that this is currently closed.

-How narrow does the “spine” section actually feel in real life? On YouTube it looks insanely exposed but I’m wondering if the camera exaggerates it. Is it manageable for someone who’s reasonably fit? For context I did the Mirador Base Las Torres hike last month and was fine but the altitude was not closer to Cloud rest.

-Did anyone experience altitude sickness up there? I read Clouds Rest is around 3,000+ meters above sea level so I’m curious how noticeable the altitude feels during the hike.

Would really appreciate any recent trail updates, conditions, snow info, or personal experiences.

Thanks!

How is living in Rochford?

Hi all,

I’m currently considering buying a house in one of the new developments along Ashingdon Road in Rochford and wanted to hear some genuine opinions from locals.

How safe is the area generally? Are there any specific roads or parts that you’d recommend avoiding?

I walked around the area and into the town square and it seemed pretty nice and relaxed even though there were surprisingly a lot of vehicles on the road.

Also how frequent do buses work ?

Would really appreciate any advice before I commit!

Thanks in advance !

Edit : Could I also understand the best travel options for commuting to London around 2–3 days a week? I checked Greater Anglia fares and the return ticket seems to cost about £35–40 per day which feels slightly expensive. Any suggestions for more cost effective ways to travel would be greatly appreciated

Hi all,

I’m planning a short trip to Nepal and, due to limited time I’ve decided not to do the full Everest Base Camp trek. Instead, I’m looking at the Everest View Hotel hike since it still offers views of Mount Everest and seems more realistic for my schedule and my fitness.

A bit about me and my plan:
- My fitness level is decent, but my experience is mostly limited to day hikes (no multi-day trekking or high altitude trekking experience yet except for visiting Atacama)
- I’m comfortable hiking for several hours a day but I’m aware altitude is a different challenge altogether.

A few questions:
- Is this hike (up to Everest View Hotel via Namche Bazaar) doable on my own with this level of experience or would you recommend hiring a guide given the altitude and terrain?
- Slightly silly question-how do tea houses work? Do you usually need to book them in advance or can you just find a room when you arrive?
- What’s the easiest way to book a stay at Everest View Hotel? I would really like to spend 2 nights here and then descend. I checked Booking.com and it looks fully booked for March/April next year already. Is that typical and are there other reliable ways to book?
- If I do decide to go with a guide,
are there any trusted agencies you’d recommend?

Would really appreciate any advice, especially from people who’ve done this as a shorter alternative to EBC!

Thanks!
