Designs released for permanent Raleigh Street Park in Footscray, previously a car park

Originally a pop-up park on a 12-month trial, the Raleigh Street park replaced 41 parking spaces in the Raleigh Street council car park. Due to positive community feedback, it's now being redesigned as a permanent park. The project was awarded a grant by the state government's Pick My Park program, although it looks like only the design is funded in the City of Maribyrnong's 2026-27 budget, and construction will need additional future funding.

See council meeting notes for more information, or provide your feedback on the draft design.

Hawke Street Greening Refined Option 2 adopted by City of Melbourne, reducing driving lanes from 4 to 2, adding protected bike lanes, 130 new trees and 4400 m² of additional greening

See Participate Melbourne and council meeting notes for more information.

This is partly funded by the Transport Amenity Program, which aims to reduce traffic impacts arising from the West Gate Tunnel.

This was not the original preferred design for the council or residents, but the constraints of the high pressure gas main along the street prevented the original design from being implemented.

Active Transport and Open Space Masterplan, Darebin to Ivanhoe Stations open for feedback

Banyule is planning a cycling corridor from Ivanhoe to Darebin stations along the railway line. It's a small but important section because it will connect central Ivanhoe to the Darebin Creek Trail, and ultimately will form part of a larger Hurstbridge rail trail.

The engagement is now open for feedback, so please support the initiative, especially if you're a Banyule local. Maybe you can help improve the design?

New plans for Inner Melbourne Activity Centres released

Press release from the state government (see the "More homes in the inner-city" section).

There's also a consultation open asking for "your help to identify and plan for great places for more homes in inner Melbourne."

It seems that these will work a bit differently from the past tranches of Activity Centres in that there is not necessarily a core and catchment. However the Built Form Overlay (BFO) is still being used.

"Shriveled" option for Wellington St passes council

The result will be a slight improvement for Wellington St, as you can see in the motion text, but nothing like the original visionary proposal. Neither modal filters nor protected bike lanes will be installed.

Manningham Active Transport Strategy open for comment

Engagement link

If you live/work/study in Manningham you get 5000 words to say whatever you want about the new Draft Strategy.

The themes and action plan seem to be okay, so if anything I expect it's the proposed cycling network that you might want to comment on (see dashed lines on the attached map). Are there any good links missing?

I had a look for budget items that we haven't previously discussed here. They don't make it easy, because the same item is divided differently with different costs on different documents, so mistakes may be present. Anyway what do you think, anything good?

Digital Rail Signalling Program development ($4.3 million) [1] [2]. The completion of a program delivery business case for a new heavy rail signalling system, which will improve the safety, reliability and operational efficiency of Victoria’s rail network.

Legacy impacts of COVID-19 on the metropolitan transport network ($121 million) [1] [2]. Funding to offset lower revenue associated with changes to travel patterns and to maintain service delivery.

Regional rail sustainability ($139.5 million) [1] [2] [3]. Funding to support regional rail network operations including operating and maintenance costs for Regional Rail Revival program assets, operating costs for new VLocity trains and the upgraded South Dynon stabling and train maintenance facility and V/Line’s corporate and operational costs. Funding is also provided for V/Line to deliver control systems renewals, axle counter upgrades on the Regional Rail Link and major periodic and routine maintenance works to maintain the sustainability of the regional passenger rail network.

Critical priorities for Melbourne’s tram network ($70 million) [1] [2]. One of the options proposed is "building cycling and walking paths". They also have some specific questions in the survey about cycling in the area. According to OpenStreetMap, there is already a shared footpath, but only on eastern side and it looks like it could be improved.

If you're local then this is a good chance to support cycle infrastructure!

Clickbait title as ever, but an interesting discussion about Broadmeadows Station anyway.

Boroondara are seeking feedback to inform their Integrated Transport Strategy. If you are a local please have a say, as the questions relate to walking, cycling and public transport use, and how the council can support it.

This relates to, but is not the same as the Greenways strategy released earlier this month.
