Not joining the office gift exchange again.
My office is doing one of those team bonding gift exchanges next month and everyone keeps asking why I haven't signed up yet.
A couple years ago I actually participated. Nothing fancy, just a small exchange where everyone draws a name and buys something within a budget. I spent time finding a gift I thought my person would genuinely like. Everyone seemed excited and on the day of the exchange people were opening gifts, laughing, posting pictures in the work chat, the whole thing.
Except me.
There was no gift with my name on it.
At first I assumed there had been some mix up. maybe my person was absent that day or forgot to bring it. no big deal. these things happen.
A week later, still nothing.
A month later, still nothing.
Eventually I found out the person who drew my name had simply never gotten around to buying anything. Apparently they kept saying they'd do it later and then never did.
Nobody followed up. nobody replaced the gift. nobody even apologized directly to me.
What made it worse wasn't the lack of a present. I'm an adult. I can buy my own stuff. It was being the only person sitting there while everyone else participated and realizing nobody cared enough to make sure the exchange actually included everyone.
Now whenever these events come around, people act confused when I decline.
Today someone asked, why don't you ever join the gift exchanges?
I just said, the last time I did, I was the only person who didn't get anything.
The awkward silence afterward was honestly worth it.
Apparently people had completely forgotten it happened.
I hadn't.
