General Hwei support guide (Any feedback is appreciated)

General Hwei support guide (Any feedback is appreciated)

Hello there, I've always loved Hwei as a character ever since his release and wanted to share my play style for support, I also want to hear everyone's opinion so that I can improve anything. If you have any feedback or questions please tell me!

Match up:

  • Vs Engage supports like Rell or Alistar you can cancel their engage with EQ (fear) and then slow them using QE (lava). You MUST save your fear and only poke with Q or WE (nami bubble)
  • Vs Hook supports like Blitzcrank or Nautilus make sure you never get hooked yourself, if your ADC gets hooked, target the enemy adc with crowd control and damage while shielding your adc with WW. Save for fear for Punishing missed hooks
  • Vs Mage supports it’s just a skill based fight, try to buy early boots to dodge skillshots and use your own spells back when their abilities are on cooldown since Hwei’s range is pretty short.
  • Vs enchanter supports, try pulling both enemies using EE (claw) and QE (lava) which forces the enemy support to choose who to protect.

Runes:

  • The standard one is Arcane Comet paired with Manaflow Band, Transcendence, and Scorch with Presence of Mind and Cut Down from the precision tree (For vs Engage, Hook and Mage supports).
  • Vs enchanter supports who can easily soak your poke with their shield/heal, I recommend Electrocute with Cheap Shot, Deep Wards and Ultimate Hunter with Hexflash and Jack of all Trades. A spell rotation with passive is enough burst to pierce through early shields. The support item grants multiple stats, buying Dark Seal activates the bonus adaptive force.

Itemization:

Dark Seal -> Blackfire Torch -> Ionian Boots of Lucidity-> Horizon Focus for vision/Liandry's Torment against heavy frontline compositions -> literally any item (Bandlepipe if you have many auto attackers, Cosmic Drive if you need more hp and kiting, Blood Letter if your team has multiple AP champs, Shurelya's Battlesong for peel, even Mikael's Blessing for cleansing Ash’s R) . Buy Oblivion Orb if the enemy has lots of  healing.

For support item, Solstice Sleigh is generally the best since the movement speed helps with peeling for you and your adc

Celestial Opposition for defense against burst assassins

Zaz'Zak's Realmspike for pure poke (Not recommended)

General laning tip:

  1. Constantly abuses bush vision to poke the enemy and create pressure
  2. Time your abilities around his rune cooldowns so that you don’t go OOM (out of mana).
  3. You must know the basics of support laning phase: Securing early control by having your adc ward the middle brush level one, triangular positioning, trade pattern, recall time, roam timer, tracking enemy jungler etc.
  4. Drop a ward in the river brush around the 2:20-2:30 to track the enemy jungler and help secure the scuttle crab. If you see the enemy jungler gank use EW (eye) and WQ (speed boost)
  5. If you push the enemy under their tower poke with EW (eye) and QW (lighting)
  6. If you get dived use WW (Shield) and EQ (fear) to try and survive
  7. Ask your jungler if they want to take grubs and rotate around 40s before it spawns

Electrocute and Hexflash vs Enchanters for Hwei Support

Hello painters, recently I've been using Electrocute with Hexflash against Enchanter supports and I feel like it's way better than the standard Comet with precision secondary.

With Comet vs Enchanters, the damage early usually isn't enough to poke out the support's shield or heal which makes it so that you enter a stalemate in laning phase. Hwei support falls off if you do not secure a lead early and gets out preformed by normal supports.

However with Electrocute Hexflash, your early damage CAN pierce through the enemy support's shielding (Example fighting level 1 using Auto E Auto). You can flash in level 3 to either poke the enemy or trade flash .Once you secure bush control you can surprise the enemy with Hexflash into EE (Claw) + QE (Lava) to poke the enemy out of lane while applying pressure when they farm. What can their enchanter even do, even if they ward I can just take sweeper for Pink ward.

It's also very good for ganking since from the enemy laner's perspective you just pop into existence out of nowhere. You could also secure deep vision in the enemy jungle and hexflash out fast for safety (while using abilities to chech bushes of course).

You also take Jack of all Trade, the support item already gives you 4 stacks, if you buy any item (usually darkseal) you instantly get 10 ap and (+4 Ability Haste before 5 stacks too). I personally build BFT ->Liandry/Horizon -> anything (Bandle pipes if many auto attackers on your team, Shurelia's battlesong if you want engage or disengage, Locket vs assasines for you and your adc), so I get 10 different stats to get an extra 25 AP.

Since you are a support you also benefit from the second sub runes for wards and trinket unlike midlane Hwei.

However keep in mind that if you play against a dive ADC (Tristana, Corki, Samira), it is better to go the standard Comet since you MUST save your disengage.

Also general support tips: Let your ADC ward middle bush level one BEFORE the minion wave comes (You can even destroy enemy ward if you are fast enough with your adc) and ward the river bush around 2:20-2:30 before scuttle spawns to avoid gank or help your junlger secure scuttle.

What do you guys think?
