Teammates Overestimating Hwei’s Capability

does anyone ever feel like their team overestimates what Hwei is capable of when making decisions? I had a Kayn in game who was in jungle wanting to contest Rift Herald, with vision on only one enemy across the map, a hyper mobile assassin whose identity i don’t remember but im fairly certain it was katarina or akali, and she was at Herald. But one could also reasonably assume that at least the enemy JG was on it as well. He pinged me for help and I came from mid to help from behind and He dove. It turned out to be a mistake because all 5 players were there and it turned out better than you would expect. I got a kill and lowered everyone else to a health point that they would have to back without taking herald. Unfortunately Kayn died in the process, and afterwards i received a barrage of ??? from him. to which i pinged all my CDs and my mana at 5% because i was laning beforehand without time to back. he entered the chat and started telling me that i should have chased katarina (i’m certain that’s who it was now) into the enemy jungle to try and kill her.
TERRIBLE idea, and i let him know that I, as an immobile mage with no escape methods, would not be chasing a full team including an assassin into THEIR jungle to attempt to get a kill on the most mobile mid lane assassin behind Zed, and he was adamant that i shouldve used my E more during the 7 second fight, and that i shouldve chased katarina, and that i could’ve saved him from dying.
I’m sure that partially this comes from just playing poorly and becoming tilted in the process, but needing to ping my mana and my CDs seems like a common theme between a lot of games. does anyone else deal with this?

Current Hwei bugs

I recently came back to Ranked and noticed a few bugs with Hwei, I'll put them down below but overall just make playing him a little frustrating.

  1. If your final ability key (Q->W in this case) cast shares the button with an ability that's on cooldown, it might not cast.

  2. Randomly didn't get my skill point for level 3, not sure what the case of this was.

  1. Ability buffering bug, I made a video over 2 years ago about this bug, still exists with the QE->EE combo where if you are doing these four inputs too fast you may drop the last E input.

Would be nice if these could get fixed, I tried reporting the 3rd one multiple times over the past 2 years but it seems to be the same as before in game.

Pandemonium skin line

Am I the only one who thinks that Hwei is PERFECT for this skin line theme? Like… Demons are attracted to emotions and see them in bright colours. All of Hwei’s story and background revolves around colours and intense emotions. I wonder why Riot didn’t think of that

First Pentakill with Hwei R+Ancest Drake

It's my first penta with the champion, previously I've only managed a quadra kill, but it finally happened.

Should Hwei be a champion that you constantly aim for pentakills with?

First Penta on Hwei!

Not sure how to increase recording quality in the replay tool (on Mac). Any hints appreciated.

General Hwei support guide (Any feedback is appreciated)

Hello there, I've always loved Hwei as a character ever since his release and wanted to share my play style for support, I also want to hear everyone's opinion so that I can improve anything. If you have any feedback or questions please tell me!

Match up:

  • Vs Engage supports like Rell or Alistar you can cancel their engage with EQ (fear) and then slow them using QE (lava). You MUST save your fear and only poke with Q or WE (nami bubble)
  • Vs Hook supports like Blitzcrank or Nautilus make sure you never get hooked yourself, if your ADC gets hooked, target the enemy adc with crowd control and damage while shielding your adc with WW. Save for fear for Punishing missed hooks
  • Vs Mage supports it’s just a skill based fight, try to buy early boots to dodge skillshots and use your own spells back when their abilities are on cooldown since Hwei’s range is pretty short.
  • Vs enchanter supports, try pulling both enemies using EE (claw) and QE (lava) which forces the enemy support to choose who to protect.

Runes:

  • The standard one is Arcane Comet paired with Manaflow Band, Transcendence, and Scorch with Presence of Mind and Cut Down from the precision tree (For vs Engage, Hook and Mage supports).
  • Vs enchanter supports who can easily soak your poke with their shield/heal, I recommend Electrocute with Cheap Shot, Deep Wards and Ultimate Hunter with Hexflash and Jack of all Trades. A spell rotation with passive is enough burst to pierce through early shields. The support item grants multiple stats, buying Dark Seal activates the bonus adaptive force.

Itemization:

Dark Seal -> Blackfire Torch -> Ionian Boots of Lucidity-> Horizon Focus for vision/Liandry's Torment against heavy frontline compositions -> literally any item (Bandlepipe if you have many auto attackers, Cosmic Drive if you need more hp and kiting, Blood Letter if your team has multiple AP champs, Shurelya's Battlesong for peel, even Mikael's Blessing for cleansing Ash’s R) . Buy Oblivion Orb if the enemy has lots of  healing.

For support item, Solstice Sleigh is generally the best since the movement speed helps with peeling for you and your adc

Celestial Opposition for defense against burst assassins

Zaz'Zak's Realmspike for pure poke (Not recommended)

General laning tip:

  1. Constantly abuses bush vision to poke the enemy and create pressure
  2. Time your abilities around his rune cooldowns so that you don’t go OOM (out of mana).
  3. You must know the basics of support laning phase: Securing early control by having your adc ward the middle brush level one, triangular positioning, trade pattern, recall time, roam timer, tracking enemy jungler etc.
  4. Drop a ward in the river brush around the 2:20-2:30 to track the enemy jungler and help secure the scuttle crab. If you see the enemy jungler gank use EW (eye) and WQ (speed boost)
  5. If you push the enemy under their tower poke with EW (eye) and QW (lighting)
  6. If you get dived use WW (Shield) and EQ (fear) to try and survive
  7. Ask your jungler if they want to take grubs and rotate around 40s before it spawns

I am also starting a Youtube channel dedicated to Hwei support, If you are interested please check it out! https://www.youtube.com/@Tanuki_Lover-r3n

Why isn’t Hwei stronger right now?

Even after buffs and the addition of Deathfire Touch, Hwei still has an average win rate in most elos and a 49% win rate in Master+. I’m not saying that he’s weak right now, but I expected him to be stronger. Does he just have a bad matchup spread in the current meta or something?

Hwei vs Zed

I'm starting to main Hwei... i love the champ but I'm barely M4 cuz i'm just starting with him...so...How do you deal with Zed? I ask because everyone I face does the same thing, and I haven't been able to find a playstyle that counters them. They all stay back and spam W with Q to poke me, and if I use my abilities to recruit, they switch places with their shadow to stay behind me and become a bigger threat. And when they reach level 6, they use their ultimate the moment they see me (its cooldown seems nonexistent because they use it constantly). Even if I try to don't interact with them and just want to farm, they become a problem with their shadows and then spamming R at the slightest provocation...Even though I need to improve using EQ behind me when they ult, it's frustrating because sometimes, even if I do it right, they still end up killing me. The problem is almost resolved in team fights, but the laning phase is still very difficult for me.

Build Help

Hello! I’m trying to figure out what would be the mathematically highest damage hwei build.
I’m unsure whether burn or pen would do the most damage. (Assuming sorc shoes)
Example:
Blackfire Torch -> liandrys -> shadowflame -> rabadons -> void staff

Malignance -> stormsurge -> shadowflame -> rabadons -> void staff

Or possibly max AP
Blackfire -> shadowflame-> rabadons -> mejais -> void staff

Is there any ways to calculate maximum dps or full combo burst? I know there will be nuance due to enemies being squishy, building HP or MR between games but hopefully there’s some general highest damage build.

Any help is appreciated, thank you :)

Supp hwei setup

I’ve been running hwei support lately with a quite different setup I’d say but I won 12 consecutive ranked games with it. The setup is first strike: boots, elixirs, jack of all trades, precision: presence of mind, and cut down items: solstice sleigh, omnivamp boots, staff of flowing waters, imperial mandate, cryptbloom and last item is flexible. With first item and boots you trigger jack of all trades so you quite a strong spike very early on. I’d like more people to try the setup out and give me their opinion

New to Hwei

Hi, I just started the game about 3 weeks ago. I'm level 28 and I got Hwei a few days ago. I was initially drawn to the concept of paint magic, I've seen it a few other types of media and have always enjoyed it.

I have been playing Hwei the last 2 days, mostly as support so I have lane help when trying to learn his abilities. The fact that he has 9 abilities is still intimidating to me, but i am determined to overcome that hurdle.

Is there any tips or tricks that you would recommend when playing Hwei Support?

I have also made a item set for him:

  • Starting Items: Doran's Ring and 2 Potions
  • Core Items: Zak'Zak's Realmspike, Blackfire Torch, Sorcerer's Shoes
  • 4th Item options: Horizon Focus, Echoes of Helia
  • 5th Item Options: Horizon Focus, Echoes of Helia, Rylai's Crystal Scepter
  • 6th Item Options: Void Staff, Rabadon's Deathcap, Cryptbloom

The only problem with this is that Doran's Ring and Echoes of Helia do NOT show up in my item list in Summoner's Rift, but they do when searching for them.

Hwei R + Flash bug makes the projectile invisible

I've been playing Hwei for a while and noticed a weird bug with his R when using Flash.

Basically, if you cast the ult and then Flash after a short delay, the animation still comes from the original position, but the actual projectile becomes invisible and starts from the position you flashed to instead.

You can see it in the video below.

I mainly wanted to ask if anyone knows how to replicate this bug more consistently. I tried it a lot in Practice Tool, but it's pretty hard to pull off consistently since the timing seems very specific.
