So excited, any advice?

Any advice you’d give a new owner? We have 2 88 Toyota trucks we have torn down and put back together so we have decent mechanical knowledge.

It sat for two years and has some parts pulled out of it and we are planning an intense week of backyard mechanics to revive. Previous owner said that it ran fine before he took it apart, didn’t even overheat just wanted to change fluids then saw (I quote) a “tiny” amount of oil in the coolant than checked oil and no coolant in oil. Have plans for water pump replacement and hoses. Should I assume head gasket is blown and plan for that job? Or could I get away with more minor repairs? We managed to secure the deal for $600, so I’m prepared to invest in revival.

Buddy and I have the same car with the same problem.

We both have 88 Toyota 22re’s, his is the forerunner and mine is the pickup. We have replaced an absurd number of parts on each. Distributor, timing chain, guides and cover, MAF sensor, front wheel bearings, Clutch and flywheel, exhaust, starter, fuel pump, fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator, valve adjustment.

Our problem is that there is a loss of pressure along with stuttering when we are under load uphill. Usually it’s in 3rd, but it happens in 2nd, and 1st. We have done lots of research on this, and it seems to come from a lot of different things. I have replaced a lot and nothing has fixed the problem. Is it possible it could be the pcv valve or the idle control?
