Almost 40. Feels like half my life is gone. Was too nice, got controlled and isolated. Now it’s either stay controlled or live alone forever?

I used to be the classic “nice guy.” Always put my partner’s needs first, always tried to keep the peace, always thought about her feelings before my own. I thought that was how you build a good relationship.

Instead, I ended up completely controlled and isolated. No real friends left, no social life, constantly walking on eggshells. Now I’m almost 40 and it feels like half my life has been wasted.

I’m finally ready to leave this marriage for good. I already left once for a month and it was the most peaceful I’ve felt in years. But the fear is still strong. Fear of being alone. Fear that at this age there’s no real chance of dating again. Fear that the only options left are “get controlled by someone else” or “live alone for the rest of my life.”

I keep asking myself: Why did this start with me? Why do I always end up suffering? Was being nice actually the problem?

I’m not looking for pity. I just want honest thoughts from people who’ve been through something similar.

Did any of you leave a controlling relationship later in life?

Did you manage to rebuild a social life and dating life after 35–40?

Or is this just how it is for guys who were too soft for too long?

Be real with me. I need perspective more than comfort right now.

Why leaving narcissictic partner so difficult?

I tried everything even leaving for a month but my wife didn't change at all. She wants me to do all chores of home and still complaints that I am not giving enough time to family. I reach home after work and she expects me to take her out, do chores in night and I should be the last guy to lay on bed after providing bedsheets and washing utelsils. If I dont do it she yells and plays victim for some old past mistakes. She has even isolated me from all of my family members. They all hate her reaction and blame me for not controlling her. Now i am all alone.
