Kösem in MYK 🪡

Why do people act like Kösem was some sort of innocent martyr of a woman who got murdered for doing absolutely nothing?

She never made peace with the fact that Murad grew up and that he was more than capable of being a sole monarch.. he warned her more than once about her meddling in his business, yet she never listened and kept on being involved in politics, making him more and more paranoid than he already was.. which led to Kasim's assassination and Ibrahim becoming more mentally unstable out of fear of being killed...

And when Ibrahim became Sultan, she did the exact same bs, and at the end, she literally let the janissary execute him even though she promised him that she will protect him (Salule for Atike and Ibrahim for calling her out on her bullshit btw).

Then, during Mehmed's reign, she created for herself a title that never existed, kept on being involved in politics till the point of kicking the sultan from the Divan and sitting in his place .. And of course, she ended up planning to kill her own grandson simply because she wanted Dilaşub who was more obedient than Turhan to become the new Küçük Valide, so she can keep on acting like the power-hungry that she is ..

I'm sorry, but she is the one who caused this upon herself. She was way too consumed by Power/Politics/ruling that she was willing to just kill a freaking kid HER OWN GRANDSON... If I were in Turhan's place, I would've done the same thing...

The concept of Iddah

So, days ago, I learned that there is a concept in Islam called "Iddah", a mandatory waiting period that a woman must observe after divorce, the death of her husband, or the dissolution of a marriage before she can legally remarry (roughly 130 days in the case of a widow).

My question is: was this also applied to the women/concubines of a deceased sultan? For example, did the wives or concubines of deceased Ottoman sultans who later remarried also have to observe ʿiddah, meaning that they had to wait roughly 130 days before marrying again?

So when is Teo gonna break up with Sila ?

Like I love ArLey and TeoDen.. Leyla and Aras are single, and the jealousy plot is coming, so there is something going on there HOWEVER When it comes to TeoDen, we didn't even get to see Teo calling things off with his gf. So, when is it going to happen because Teo is obviously smitten with Deniz, and I kinda want to see some sort of progress with them as well...

Seriously asking btw 🤔

The amount of glazing that I've been seeing for Abdulhamid II on this sub is just astonishing. Like, I've seen people ranking the guy next and sometimes even above sultans like Süleyman I, Mehmed II, Murad IV, Selim I, etc .. So my question is: Did I miss a chapter or two while reading about him/his era, or do some people here just glaze him for the sake of glazing even though he was a horrendous monarch as a whole ?

Were there any male sultans known for being good looking ?

In the show, they cast multiple good-looking/charismatic men to play the roles of sultans/viziers/şehzades so I wonder if irl some of these guys were actually handsome?

So, is there a chance that Mehmed IV had more than just one Haseki ?

In my hunt for any information about Murad IV’s harem, especially the supposed ghost-like second Haseki, I came across some interesting information regarding other female figures, including the women of Mehmed IV. Apparently, according to multiple privy registers, Mehmed had only one Haseki, namely Rabia Gülnuş Sultan. However, multiple sources, including contemporary ones, claim that Mehmed had at least one more Haseki besides Rabia Gülnuş.

**In The History of the Turkish Empire (1687), English diplomat and historian Sir Paul Rycaut, who lived in Istanbul from 1661 to 1667 (making him a contemporary source), wrote that "Mehmed fell in love with a young lady from his harem in 1673, after he had been practically devoted to Rabia Gülnuş" (p. 235). Picture 1.

On page 251, he also wrote that Mehmed "gave himself to amours; for falling in love with a Polish woman, lately captivated at Kamenets, he made her his second Hasakee or Sultaness; for having had the good fortune to bear him a son, that honour was the reward of her fruitfulness." This would have occurred around 1675 or 1676. Picture 1.

**In Volume 11 of L'Histoire de l'Empire Ottoman, Von Hammer also mentions that Mehmed had two Hasekis.

On page 413, he writes: "The Valide Sultan (Queen Mother), the Great Khasseki Sultan, and the Little Sultana of the same rank (Khasseki), the new favorite, all wept profusely, but for very different reasons. The Valide Sultan wept out of fear that the circumcision of her grandson would serve as the signal for the long-planned murder of Prince Süleyman. The mother (the Great Khasseki) wept with overwhelming joy at having given birth to the heir to the throne. And the younger favorite wept from sorrow and resentment at not herself being the mother of a prince." This refers to the events of 1675. Picture 2.

On page 419, he further writes: "The jewels were carried by twenty çavuşes (palace officers) in silver basins lined with embroidered cloths. They consisted of... four diamond-studded belts for the Valide Sultan, the two Khasseki Sultans, and the bride; three diamond-encrusted turbans for the bride, the Khasseki Sultan, and the daughter of the Little Khasseki, who was destined to marry the kaymakam Kara Mustafa." Picture 2.

**Üsküdarî Abdullah Efendi (a contemporary source), in Vâkı'ât-ı Rûz-merre, Volume I, mentions two additional Hasekis besides Rabia Gülnuş. He refers to Afife and Şefika as Mehmed IV's Hasekis and records that both had daughters by him (pp. 327 and 398). Picture 3.

So, yes... Mehmed obviously loved Afife very much. At some point, she began receiving almost the same salary as Rabia Gülnuş. She also accompanied him on military campaigns, just as Gülnuş did, and the two exchanged romantic poems. Therefore, if Afife was indeed elevated to the rank of Haseki, then two of the three sources mentioned above agree that this promotion occurred in 1675.

I know it is a dumb question but imma ask anyway 🫠

If Ayşe's name was only identified during Ibrahim and Mehmed's reign. What is the proof that she was the 1st Haseki of Murad IV and not the second one ?

Hürrem & Sülo' monogamy 🫶

Sometimes, I see people trying so hard to prove that Süleyman wasn't monogamous and that he continued having sexual relations with Mahidevran, at least until the incident where she physically assaulted Hürrem.

That made me wonder: is there actually any contemporary gossip, rumor, or report (even an unreliable, apocryphal, or otherwise non-canonical one) that suggests Süleyman was not monogamous?

Personally, I've never come across anything of the sort.

Haseki Hürrem Sultan 👑🧡

Did Hürrem have total control over Süleyman? Are there any recorded instances where she didn't get what she wanted? Did Süleyman ever go against her wishes and simply say "no"?

Could Hürrem really do whatever she wanted whenever she wanted? Did she intervene in every political decision, attend Imperial Council (Divan) meetings, appoint statesmen, or rule as sultan when Süleyman was absent instead of a grand vizier taking charge? Or were there actually limits and boundaries to her power and influence?

What are your biggest "WHAT IFs" 🤔

What are your biggest what ifs regarding the Ottoman Empire?

Imma start with mine:

• What if Mustafa escaped from his father's tent/was saved from the execution

• What if Hürrem was still alive during her son's reign (Hürrem, Mihrimah, Nurbanu, and Safiye in the same era would've been lit)

• What if Ayşe Haseki (Murad's consort) had an heir when her husband died

• What if Kösem survived her assassination attempt
