The Effect of Shunning Pete Alonso

Encouraging the greatest home run hitter in franchise history to walk away was a colossal mistake. Halfway through the season, Alonso has more home runs than the frequently injured Jorge Polanco has games played. Alonso is likely to finish the season somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 home runs.

Through the end of Carlos Mendoza's tenure in 2026, the Mets were 31-31 in games Juan Soto played. The team has a losing record (3-16 under Mendoza) because of the games Soto missed. But that really speaks to roster construction. Soto has consistently posted throughout his career. He is at or near the top of the NL in OPS. Imagine how much more he could produce with Alonso hitting behind him.

The Mets' lineup is significantly easier to navigate without Soto playing. While it isn't expected Soto will be injured, there has to be a Plan B. That should have been Pete Alonso. Hitters in front of Alonso would see more fastballs for strikes. There would still be a guy in the lineup opponents would discuss during pitchers meetings.

Instead, the Mets appear to have no Plan B.
