What Minecraft version between 1.0 - 1.6.4 is the best?

I want to start a new Minecraft world, but I'm not sure which version to choose. I have 4 main choices, 1.1, 1.2.5, 1.5.2 and 1.6.4

I'm just wondering what would be the best version for that

I don't abandon my Beta 1.7.3 world tho. I still play it.

Also, any quality of life mods for this version? You know, mouse tweaks, coordinates, but also charcoal, or wool crafted from 4 strings intead of 9 (I think Mongster have these).
