Definition:
Romanticism was a major literary, artistic and intellectual movement that emerged in Europe in the late 18th century and reached its peak during the first half of the 19th century. It arose partly as a reaction against the rationalism, order and classical conventions of the Enlightenment and Neoclassicism. Romantic writers placed particular emphasis on individuality, emotional intensity, imagination and the pursuit of personal and artistic freedom.
