Didn't hear any crunches so there must be clearance

Was getting annoyed because I thought I'd have to stick the tool out a bit more and re-indicate but by some minor miracle everything fits

Sometimes you get lucky

Op 5 of some 316 parts, m3x.5 spiral flute broke on the first one after proving it out on a scrap piece. Managed to back it out with a pair of pliers and idk whether to buy a lotto ticket right now or never again because that's the luckiest I'll ever be

First time turning 316

Honestly it wasn't too bad. I ended up leaving ~1/8 stock for the finishing cut so the little nib would be supported and it worked great, granted I had to dial feed way back to .001 ipr. Tried using the same process to make one from 17-4 and the insert was decidedly unhappy and the tip fucked off on the second part.

I've joined the 21st century

Bought this from China and I was fully expecting it to be counterfeit b/c it was $250 bucks but I figured if it talks to the receiver, I'm happy enough paying $250 for something I can use to locate stock for op1. But after getting receiving it in what appeared to be a legitimate Renishaw box, and it locating a boss within a tenth after calibrating, as well as the nice finish and printing on the unit itself I'm not so sure it's fake. Some kind of shenanigans going on to be sure, the other theory I've read is that factory workers run a hustle reporting them broken and reselling. I'm still kind of leaning towards it being a fake just on the count of the sheer quantity available on ebay and they're all omp40-2, but if it is they did a bang up job.

Zephyrus G14 Overheating while in sleeve

This has now happened twice - I unplug my laptop (which as far as I'm aware ought to be asleep) and put it in it's sleeve and I pick it up 5 minutes later and the sleeve is warm. I take it out and the entire chassis is hot to the touch and the fans a blasting. The first time it happened I panicked and forced it off, after which it didn't want to come back up for about 5 minutes. This time I let it run until the fans slowed down in the hopes I could figure out wtf it was doing that was causing it to heat up like that but it just blinked one of the LEDs and then the keyboard flashed if I plugged it in. Very alarming - this time I could smell things starting to burn.

I've even been shutting it down before putting it into the sleeve - this time it wouldn't come up and there were no LEDs on so I just assumed it was out of batteries before putting it in, but that was obviously not the case. Anyone have any ideas b/c this is completely unacceptable

Bookshelves I made from 6061 aluminum. Scanspeak illuminator woofer and Bozhen audio CQ76B ribbon tweeter, biamped w active xover

Incredibly happy with how my latest endeavor has turned out. The sound has exceeded my wildest expectations, and while there's a few things I can nit pick on the execution (the upper vertical patterns just did not want to locate properly no matter what I did so they're off at one junction or another by .015" or so, just enough to be visible.

But when I take off my critic hat and put on my listening hat I'm blown away. The clarity and amount of bass such a little driver can make, and the tweeter is crystal clear and non-fatiguing.,

Plan to add some damping/bracing but as it is, it's very stiff/dead, I used pocketed screws to join the panels at each edge with 7 screws on the long edges and two on the short for each panel, and all the sealing surfaces are gasketed which I think also helps quite a bit with damping.

Speaker Update: I can hear music

Over the moon with how well this turned out - I couldn't get to a handful of the internal screws b/c the tweeter was in the way but the tweeter has to go in first bc the woofer ring overlaps it a bit, and I planned this whole thing extremely poorly (made the baffle picking some locations that looked good for endholes w a rough sketch of the panels but then I changed my mind on the miters and the locations weren't so good anymore)

But it doesn't matter - the gaskets did their job and there is nary a leak on the thing. On top of that despite having no damping material inside yet the cabinet is extremely dead. And I was worried the enclosure volume would be too low but I finally calculated it and it came out right on target (if you ignore the fact that the woofer and tweeter take up volume but that's what the damping material is for)

The bass that just the one puts out is incredible, and it does it without distorting the mid-range. I haven't hit the excursion limits yet which is great b/c my plan was to add some LF boost to extend the response 10-15hz beyond its natural rolloff @ 70hz. The tweeter Is also fantastic, great resolution and presence without sibilance or listening fatigue.

Really outdid myself w this one if I do say so myself.

From "Crows Are White" - it was decent but really only worth a watch for this guy IMO, feelgood story but the director could not get out of his own way which I guess was kind of what the movie was about but some of the choices he made were just bewildering. This monk really stole the show tho

Also the first aluminum parts run on our new DNM4500 which so far I'm loving other than the control taking some getting used to. Made in the mill b/c we didn't have any round stock big enough.

The purpose of the ring (beyond aesthetics) is to space the woofer out from front baffle so that its acoustic center (the average location where the sound is emitted) is the same distance away from the listener as the tweeter. I made a little two part test baffle and some gauge blocks to validate some measurements I took to determine the appropriate offset. It's not an exact science by any means, as the acoustic center will vary with frequency, I chose the offset to be most accurate at the crossover frequency (the frequency where the levels of the woofer and tweeter are equal).

I was debating just roughing the ring turning taper on b/c I don't have be best luck with getting good finishes w long engagement on tapered endmills but these came out well enough I don't think I'll skim them in the lathe.

Box will be sealed and DSP'd to extend the low frequency response, pairing it w some Chinese ribbon tweeters that have been sitting on my shelf for a couple years now waiting for a project. The pictured enclosure isn't finalized just a quick mockup so I could get a sense of scale.

Sounded exactly like when you break a tool in a hole and it starts munching on the bits of carbide.

I didn't even know they were particularly hard until I mangled my HSS spot drill. Then switched to a 13.7 mm carbide drill, the longest solid cabride we have in the shop which made it about 2/3 of the way thru, sounding honestly not bad. Then went to a 1/2" 4 flute with 4.4" of stickout and helixed a .530 bore, 2 degrees 600 rpm, 1.5ipm - it was when this hit the hard case on the bottom that the horrific noises started. (which we were told by kurt shouldn't be hard edit: I think just that particular casting had hard bits near the bottom because the other 2 have sounded substantially better if not good, so Kurt was correct to tell us that it shouldn't be hard lol they didn't say it won't be) I stopped it once because I was absolutely certain the endmill was fucked but imagine my surprise when it was in one piece, albeit the edges had seen better days. It is currently doing the second hole and the noises just started again, pray for me boys

*2nd edit*

The 3rd vise I'm modifying the 1/2" cutter isn't making a peep the whole way thru. So original post was likely just a crappy spot in the casting; this post is in no way intended to disparage, defame or slander the magnificent vise brand Kurt™ who have been nothing but helpful and make a fantastic product tho I will say their free swag is sorely lacking, if their brand guy reads this, send us a hat or something we got like 15 of these things around the shop
