Nintendo 3DS XL turns on but has no image — backlight works. What should I check?

Hi everyone. I have an original Nintendo 3DS XL (not the New 3DS XL) that I'm trying to repair, and I'd really appreciate some advice before I buy another replacement screen.

I live in a small town in Brazil, so finding someone who can properly repair a 3DS is pretty difficult. I've already contacted a few repair technicians in nearby cities, including some people who specialize in console repairs, but unfortunately none of them are willing to take on the job.

The console itself works normally. It powers on, the system boots, the bottom screen works, audio works, buttons work, etc. The main problem is the top screen.

The top screen currently:

  • Has backlight
  • Turns on and becomes uniformly gray/black
  • Shows no actual image
  • Never displays the Nintendo 3DS logo or anything else

One important detail about the history of the console: the original top screen was working perfectly before the repair. The only problem with it was that its ribbon cable was damaged. The technician then replaced the entire screen with a third-party replacement.

The current "backlight but no image" problem only started after the original screen was replaced. Before the ribbon cable was damaged, the original screen displayed the image normally. The third-party screen didn't show up any image.

The video output were working normally with the original screen before the replacement prior to the cable damage.

From what I understand, the possible causes could be:

  • A defective replacement LCD
  • The top-screen ribbon cable being damaged
  • The ribbon cable not being properly seated
  • A damaged/dirty/oxidized connector on the motherboard
  • Damage to the connector or its pins
  • Possibly a motherboard/video signal issue

The console has been opened before, so I'm particularly concerned about the ribbon cable and the connector.

What would you recommend checking first?

Is there a way to determine whether the problem is the LCD, the ribbon cable, or the motherboard connector before buying another screen?

I'm comfortable doing the repair myself if necessary. I've found several tutorials for replacing the top LCD, and I'm willing to take the 3DS apart again. However, I don't want to buy another screen if the actual problem is somewhere else.

If anyone has dealt with this exact symptom — 3DS XL boots normally + top-screen backlight works + no image — I'd really appreciate any advice or diagnostic steps.

If I can’t get the repair to work, or if it turns out not to be worth it, I’ll probably sell the console for parts. I’d rather try to repair it first, though, since the rest of the console is in pretty good condition and works normally.

Thanks!
