KEH Quoted me over $1K for an EVF repair. RX100M7

I bought a well used RX100M7 in late August from FB Marketplace. The EVF didn't work, so I got a bit of a deal on it at $750. I figured I'd enjoy it as-is for a while, and then get it fixed.

I put out feelers for repair via KEH and a smaller mom-n-pop shop in Connecticut which is "Sony Certified" or whatever. That other shop quoted me $450, but I think it was an actual human who read my email and saw that it needed an EVF repair/replacement.

KEH sent me an automated quote of $315 starting rate. So I figured I didn't have much to lose and maybe the EVF is covered in this standard rate.

After two weeks of them acknowledging receipt of the camera, they finally emailed me an assessment today as follows:

"Hello ,

Upon further inspection of your Sony DSC RX 100 M7 with Serial Number #xxxxx the repair technician discovered the following:

This is not covered under the standard repair price. We must re-estimate the repair cost to $1071 +$29.95 for Two - Day shipping. This will bring your total to $1100.95. The re-estimate covers the labor, cleaning, and additional parts and shipping. Do you wish to approve the re-estimate?

The part is expected to be delivered in approximately weeks. Once it does, we will complete the repairs and ship it back to you as soon as possible.

Or, if you choose, we can return the equipment to you unrepaired with a $100 bench fee, plus shipping cost. You will also receive an email from FedEx with a tracking number. If you are unable to sign for the package, please let us know by replying to this email. By requesting the package to be sent without a signature you are waiving KEH from any responsibility for any lost packages."

I declined as the cost of the camera and repair together exceeds buying a new or mint example. And now I have to pay $100 just for them to send me my imperfect camera back.

I then asked if they could just perform a cleaning and how much that would cost. I'll see what they come back with but I'm assuming it's that standard $315 rate.

Just letting you guys know how KEH operates for repairs.

Cars & Coffee in Queens with the RX100VII [OC]

A mix of Program Auto and Shutter priority. Full Res JPGs (FLAT profile) beamed to my Galaxy Fold 8 and edited in Lightroom mobile. I love this workflow. Wish I had a polarizer but the ring adapter arrives tomorrow.

Touring Taillight Appreciation Day

Post your favorite touring tooshie shots. Let's see those rear ends!

For those who are curious, this was shot with my newly acquired (used) Sony RX100M7. Better than a cell phone camera, much smaller and lighter than big dslr and mirrorless cameras I own. It has an equivalent 28-200mm zoom range all in package the size of a deck of cards. This is the only camera I'm taking with me to car meets and shows going forward.

Pro Photographer: Just Picked up an RX100 VII (and a VA alternative) - Initial impressions: Impressed.

TLDR: Great little pocket camera, fills a void between phones and pro cameras.

I'm a full time professional photographer since 2009 and I mainly shoot formal events, portraits and real estate with a little product and food photography here and there. I've used full frame Nikons since the D700 and D3 era, more recently with the Z8 and Z6ii as my daily workhorses paired with various workhorse 2.8 zooms, and some primes. I used to love shooting street photography when I had more spare time before marriage and 3 kids, but I'd rather not carry all my heavy full-frame gear when I'm not working. I'm just tired and achy now (46, with freshly diagnosed arthritis in both knees from years of basketball).

I thought that the most recent crop of triple camera phones from the last few years would scratch my itch for telephoto stuff, but coming from 70-200 2.8 full frame Nikon glass, I've been largely disappointed on that front from both android and iOS devices (At least here in the states). I knew I wanted something intermediate between the phones and my pro gear to fill the void for some decent quality shots with friends, family and travel. I took my Nikon Z8 to Greece on my last 2 trips with a 24-120 F4S lens (slightly shorter reach than the Rx100 VII) and while the photos are amazing in quality and I can print them to poster size, I would have rather not carried that big a camera in the summer, especially with chasing kids around.

I'd been lurking in these subreddits and on the internets for months trying to nail down a good point and shoot that also has good AF and manual shooting options. Everything kept pointing me to the RX100 VA and the RX100 VII. I wanted both for their respective strengths, but I couldn't justify paying close to $2K for the privilege. Folks here have been saying to wait for deals on FB Marketplace, etc.

So I lurked.

And I waited.

This week I scored both... Sorta.

A couple of days ago I found a great deal on eBay for the spiritual successor to the RX100 VA, the original ZV-1 MKI, which isn't as popular as the RX line, as it was marketed as a "vlogging" camera (whatever that means). It's a bit thicker and the controls have been stripped down to be more video-centric, and it's plastic and not metal, etc etc, but it has the exact same sensor and bright lens as the VA with the benefit of newer AF speed and accuracy. I think this will scratch my itch for the more intimate, low-light stuff, and it also has a hot shoe for lighting triggers and audio things! $400 shipped. It arrives on Friday, but....

In the meantime I also found an RX100 VII listed on Marketplace near me here in NYC. The EVF has stopped working and there is some dust in the lens, but otherwise it is fully functional. The guy was asking for $950 and I talked him down to $750. I plan to get it repaired eventually, but at this price I figured it couldn't hurt to try it out and potentially resell it if i don't love it. It came with a couple of spare aftermarket batteries, a charger and a Peak Design wrist strap (which I've always wanted for a small camera).

Well, I picked it up this morning in Brooklyn and decided to just fire shots off from the car while driving back to Astoria, Queens. I just left it in P mode with JPG, popped in a spare SD card. I haven't even touched the settings yet as I still want to download the manual and read up a bit. I just treated it like a true P&S from the 2000s era, turn it on, zoom, compose, shoot. I took snaps while at various stoplights, and a few while driving on the BQE back to queens. I got home, and popped the Jpgs into Lightroom for a quick 5 minute to adjust some basics like exposure and white balance. All exported to about 1500x1000

QUICK IMPRESSIONS (in mid-day sun):

Autofocus: Wow. It's fast and pretty accurate for people on the street at all focal lengths. At one point while driving about 50mph, I just pointed the camera out of the driver's window at some construction workers on the left and it nailed focus and shutter speed (between 1/2000 and 1/4000) on its own. Everything looks like we're stopped in traffic. no phone can really do that right now. Impressed.

Pixel peeping Detail: As expected. Better than the zoom on any current phone, not quite a full frame DSLR or mirrorless camera. More than acceptable for casual shooting and street stuff, especially if you want to post to socials.

Size/Handling: It's a bit heavier than I expected but in a good way. It feels well built. The shutter button is in a position I don't love, especially trying to shoot one-handed, but I'll get used to it. I kind of wish it was a pinch to the right and a a couple of millimeters back, but I'm splitting hairs here.

So far, liking it a lot. I'll probably chime in here in a month or two with some long-term thoughts after becoming between acquainted.

Smart Launcher 6 Allows Nova-esque features AND separate layouts in/out

TLDR: Try Smart Launcher 6 for rich customization features and the ability to create independent layouts between your fold's inner and outer screen.

I've been an android guy since the original Droid in 2009 and I've been using Nova Launcher on slab, single screen phones since 2012-ish with roughly the same layout with slight tweaks over the years.

I had grown very accustomed to the infinitely scrollable dock with folders that can swiped up to open for more apps in that category OR a single click to launch the main app who's icon had become the folder's skin. If you know Nova, you know what I'm talking about and how important over a decade of muscle memory is.

When I got the fold 8 recently, to my surprise, Nova Launcher didn't support independent layouts for both screens. Whatever backup I had from my previous S23 on the cover screen was hastily pasted to the inner display and I needed different things for this phone to work for me.

After some quick gemeni inquiries I stumbled upon Smart Launcher 6 which meets and exceeds Nova in my opinion. It allows for separate layouts to each screen and when you back up your setup it's just one file for both displays. Brilliant.
