Is elevated AST/ALT 6 weeks from hepatitis common?
Hi all, looking for some perspective on my recovery from acute hepatitis/liver injury.
I was admitted to hospital in early July with jaundice after a period involving heavy alcohol and recreational drug use (coke & MDMA). The working diagnosis was drug-induced liver injury. Viral hepatitis testing was negative and ultrasound showed no obstruction/fibrosis, just a slightly fatty liver. My INR/clotting and albumin remained normal.
My bilirubin peaked around 270 µmol/L and has since fallen significantly:
Bilirubin: 270 → 58 → 38
ALT: peaked ~750, fell to ~323, now 394
AST: now 123
ALP: 293, now 361
Albumin: 42 (stayed consistent at 39 throughout)
Clinically I feel much better and the jaundice/dark urine/pale stools have resolved, but I’m concerned that ALT and ALP are still elevated and have increased somewhat despite bilirubin continuing to fall.
Has anyone recovering from DILI/acute hepatitis experienced this kind of pattern, where bilirubin improves much faster than the enzymes? How long did it take for your ALT/ALP to normalise?
I’m continuing to abstain from alcohol/drugs and have medical follow-up arranged — just interested in others’ experiences while I wait.
