What makes Supergirl stand out from others? What makes her unique unto herself?
What makes Supergirl different from other heroes, but most especially different from her cousin?
The limit of my experience with the character; I've only read Woman of Tomorrow (twice before the film release) and recently picked up the Silver Age Omnibus Vol 1. I watched The CW show with Melissa Benoist up to the last season, both seasons of Superhero Girls, the Flash film with Sasha Calle, and of course Milly's latest version.
Do people think WoT is the peak GOAT definitive version of Kara? I didn't see how she helped define and distinguish herself from Clark in this story. I didnt think Krem was a very exciting villain for SG, he's more of Ruthyes villain/nemesis than hers especially since Krypto isnt really in the same amount of danger in the comic version. And being that the whole thing is narrated by Ruthye it seems more like her story, in which Supergirl plays a significant part in Her quest.
Maybe someone can say why this story is important or defining for the character, in comparison to her comic stories that came before? Is this story really sacrosanct to SG fans?
I dont understand the critique...
*'In the comic Krem is generic and mundane (dude with a moustache, no powers) because he's supposed to symbolize the generic mundane threat within the indiscriminate harshness of space.'
AND
'Why did they change Krems appearance to be more like some generic forgettable DCU version of taser face?'
They literally contradict eachother, Is he supposed to mundane and generic in design or...?
*'Krypto not being in immediate danger and motivating Kara to seek Krems antidote shows she chooses to help Ruthye of her own accord'
And, changing it to be a real threat and real goal for Kara solidifies her personal motivation and stakes in it, shes emotionally invested in saving her dog, AND comes to help Ruthye and all the trafficked girls in the process. I relate more to her personal stakes, than the idea shes so benevolent she has no personal interest except to help Ruthye. That was the catalyst for further caring, why not both? Shes not perfect or an ideal, shes more real, messy and chaotic. Maybe that makes her more human than even Clark.
*'she kills Krem instead of sending him to the phantom zone for 300 years'
The phantom zone isnt established, not an option. Makes sense they dont want the DCU to jump ahead 300 years because of this one story.
Once you accept that its not Woman of Tommorrow it seems easier to enjoy it on its own. I thought her killing this version of Krem, in this version of the story made more sense and was saying Supergirl will go all the way to avenge and protect those who cannot protect themselves. No one else seemed eager to stop the intergalactic human traffickers. I think its Bizarre that people want her to just let him and the Brigands go to continue their work in order to maintain the integrity of a non killing Supergirl ideal. I thought this was important precisely because most heroes dont kill etc.
I do understand wanting more exciting visuals as in the comic art, but i can understand the angle of making it a dirty dusty hostile wild west/mad max type of experience as well, what with the indiscrminate uninviting harshness of space.
I do understand wanting Kara and Ruthye to establish a stronger relationship through their travels so it seems more natural and organic for her to take Ruthyes wuest personally and for her to grow
I think the goal of the movie should have been to distinguish her enough from Clark to make her her own person. Maybe this should be the goal overall, rather than homogenizethe the two. Look at Jor El and Zor El's completely different attitudes about their offspring in the DCU, and they're siblings. Cousins are even further apart.
I just thought the movie was ok, not any extreme.
The most unique version of Supergirl that has stood out to me is the one from the Superhero Girls animated show, shes punk rock, hostile and aggressive, loud and in your face, tough, strong a little wild and chaotic but ultimately good. It seemed like they tried in some way to tap into that a little bit, maybe should have leaned into it more.
Do fans want something that aligns her more closely with Clarks behavior and values, or something that makes her more her own?
